Miami Dolphins make roster moves

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have placed a first-round tender on linebacker Kiko Alonso, original round tenders on safety Michael Thomas and running back Damien Williams and restructured the contract of defensive end Nick Williams. Alonso, Thomas and Damien Williams were tendered as restricted free agents.

Alonso started 15 games for the Dolphins in 2016, leading the team and ranking No. 9 in the AFC with 115 tackles (69 solo). He also tallied two interceptions, four passes defensed, one forced fumble and four fumble recoveries. His four fumble recoveries were tied for the league lead. Alonso was traded to the Dolphins on March 9, 2016 from Philadelphia. He originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick (46th overall) by the Buffalo Bills in the 2013 NFL draft.

Thomas played in all 16 games with the Dolphins in 2016 and made eight starts, totaling 39 tackles (27 total), one sack, one pass defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He tied for the NFL lead with 19 total special teams tackles and had an interception in Miami’s AFC Wild Card game at Pittsburgh. Thomas has played 43 games with 23 starts in his four-year NFL career, all coming with the Dolphins (2013-16). Miami signed him off San Francisco’s practice squad on Dec. 10, 2013. Thomas originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with the 49ers on May 4, 2012.

Damien Williams played in 15 games for the Dolphins in 2016 and totaled 35 carries for 115 yards (3.3 avg.) and three touchdowns. He posted career highs with 23 receptions for 249 yards (10.8 avg.) and three receiving touchdowns and caught a 4-yard touchdown pass in Miami’s AFC Wild Card game at Pittsburgh. During his three-year NFL career, Williams has played in 47 games for the Dolphins (2014-16) and totaled eight touchdowns – three rushing and five receiving. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with the Dolphins on May 12, 2014.

Nick Williams played in five games with the Dolphins in 2016 after also participating in five contests with the Kansas City Chiefs earlier in the season. He totaled seven tackles (six solo) in his 10 total games played in 2016. Williams was awarded to the Dolphins off waivers from Kansas City on Oct. 19, 2016 after he played from 2014-16 for the Chiefs. In his three-year NFL career, Williams has played 26 games. He originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick (223rd overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2013 NFL draft.
