MIAMI DOLPHINS SIGN ALL-PRO WILLIAMS

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins today announced that the team has signed four-time Pro Bowl defensive end Mario Williams to a free agent contract.

Williams has totaled 96 career sacks and 153 quarterback hits during his 10-year NFL career. His sack total is tied for sixth among all active NFL players. He has started all 145 games that he has played in and has played a full 16 games in seven of his 10 professional seasons. His 386 career tackles are fourth among active defensive ends and his 96 sacks are tied for the third-most among all NFL players since he entered the league in 2006.

The 6-foot-6, 292 pound defensive end earned Pro Bowl nods following the 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2014 seasons and was named first team All-Pro in 2014. Williams played the past four seasons (2012-15) for the Buffalo Bills and ranked sixth in the NFL with 43 sacks during those four years, including 10-plus sacks in three consecutive seasons from 2012 to 2014.

Williams was the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Houston Texans in the 2006 NFL draft. He will be only the fifth former No. 1 overall pick to play for the Dolphins organization, joining tackle Jake Long (2008 NFL draft by Miami), defensive tackle Dan Wilkinson (1994 by Cincinnati), defensive tackle Steve Emtman (1992 by Indianapolis) and wide receiver Irving Fryar (1984 by New England). Williams was named first team All-American in 2005 after setting the single-season school records for sacks (14.5) and tackles for loss (27.5). He also is North Carolina State’s career record-holder in both categories.
