Miami Dolphins sign Alonso to contract extension

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed linebacker Kiko Alonso to a contract extension through the 2020 season.

Alonso started 15 games in 2016 and posted a team-high 115 tackles (69 solo). His 115 tackles were ninth in the AFC. He also tallied two interceptions, four passes defensed, one forced fumble and four fumble recoveries. His four fumble recoveries were tied for the league lead. Alonso was traded to the Dolphins on March 9, 2016 from Philadelphia.

Alonso had played for two teams in his four-year NFL career prior to joining the Dolphins. He originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick (46th overall) by the Buffalo Bills in the 2013 NFL draft and was the Pro Football Writers Association NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. He missed the entire 2014 season due to injury before he was traded to the Eagles in 2015. During his career, Alonso has played in 42 games with 32 starts, 317 tackles (186 solo), two sacks, seven interceptions, nine passes defensed, two forced fumbles and six fumble recoveries.
