Miami Dolphins sign Flowers

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed linebacker Trey Flowers.

Flowers enters his eighth NFL season after spending four with New England (2015-18) and three with Detroit (2019-21). He’s played in 75 career games with 64 starts, totaling 261 tackles (160 solo), 31.5 sacks, seven passes defensed, 10 forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. Flowers has started nine playoff games and appeared in three Super Bowls with New England, winning Super Bowls LI and LIII. He originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick (101st overall) by New England in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Miami Dolphins make roster moves

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have waived punter Sterling Hofrichter, linebacker Deandre Johnson and safety Sheldrick Redwine. The team also placed cornerback Mackensie Alexander and fullback John Lovett on injured reserve.

Alexander was signed by the Dolphins on Aug. 15, 2022. He’s played six NFL seasons, spending five with Minnesota (2016-19, 2021) and one with Cincinnati (2020). Alexander has appeared in 84 career games with 25 starts, recording 197 tackles (144 solo), 4.5 sacks, three interceptions, 32 passes defensed and one fumble recovery. He’s also played in two playoff games. Alexander originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick (54th overall) by Minnesota in the 2016 NFL Draft following a collegiate career at Clemson. An Immokalee, Florida native, he attended Immokalee High School.

Hofrichter joined the Dolphins as a free agent signing on Aug. 5, 2022. He was a seventh-round pick (228th overall) by Atlanta in the 2020 NFL Draft and played in all 16 games for the Falcons his rookie season, totaling 56 punts for 2,381 yards (42.5 avg.) with 17 inside the 20. In 2021, Hofrichter spent part of the season on Tampa Bay’s practice squad and appeared in two games for the Buccaneers. He played collegiately at Syracuse.

Johnson signed with Miami as an undrafted college free agent on May 13, 2022. He played in all 12 games with 10 starts as a graduate transfer for the University of Miami in 2021, totaling 26 tackles (14 solo), 4.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Johnson spent the previous four seasons (2017-20) at Tennessee, where he appeared in 41 contests. He is a Miami native and won a state championship at Miami Southridge High School in 2016.

Lovett signed with the Dolphins on Feb. 18, 2022. He played eight games for Green Bay in 2020, totaling three carries for six yards (2.0 avg.). He also totaled four special teams tackles (three solo). Lovett originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with Kansas City on May 4, 2019. He primarily played quarterback at Princeton, where he was the school’s first two-time first-team All-American since 1964.

Redwine originally joined the Dolphins on Oct. 26, 2021 and spent parts of the 2021 season on both the active roster and practice squad, appearing in four games with Miami and two with the N.Y. Jets. Redwine spent the first two years (2019-20) of his career in Cleveland and has played in 33 career games with eight starts. He originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick (119th overall) by Cleveland in the 2019 NFL Draft. Redwine is a Miami native and played at Killian High School before attending the University of Miami.

Miami Dolphins make roster moves

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have waived offensive lineman Cole Banwart, wide receiver DeVonte Dedmon and defensive lineman Jordan Williams. The team also waived/injured cornerback Tino Ellis and placed tight end Adam Shaheen on injured reserve.

Banwart was signed by the Dolphins on May 14, 2022. He had three stops during the 2021 season, spending time on the practice squads of the N.Y. Giants and Minnesota and training camp with Tennessee. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with Tennessee on May 14, 2021 after playing collegiately at Iowa.

Dedmon joined the Dolphins on Jan. 27, 2022 after spending two seasons with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League. He was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Special Teams Player in 2021 after leading the league in several return statistics. Dedmon was a four-year letterman at William & Mary.

Ellis was signed by the Dolphins on July 27, 2022. He also spent time on Miami’s practice squad in 2020 and 2021. In the spring of 2022, Ellis played for the USFL’s Michigan Panthers, appearing in nine games and recording 35 tackles (26 solo) and one interception. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with New Orleans on April 29, 2020 following a collegiate career at Maryland.

Shaheen joined the Dolphins after a trade from Chicago on July 26, 2020. He played in 28 games with 12 starts for Miami over the past two seasons (2020-21), totaling 24 receptions for 260 yards (10.8 avg.) and three touchdowns. Shaheen originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick (45th overall) by Chicago in the 2017 NFL Draft. He played collegiately at Ashland.

Williams was signed by Miami as an undrafted college free agent on May 13, 2022. He played his senior season at Virginia Tech, where he appeared in 12 games with seven starts. Prior to that, Williams played at Clemson, where he helped the Tigers win the CFP National Championship at the end of his redshirt freshman season (2018).

Miami Dolphins make roster moves

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed cornerback Mackensie Alexander and defensive tackle Niles Scott. The team also placed cornerback Trill Williams on injured reserve.

Alexander is entering his seventh NFL season after spending five with Minnesota (2016-19, 2021) and one with Cincinnati (2020). Scott originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with San Francisco on April 30, 2018. He’s spent time on the practice squads of San Francisco (2018), Denver (2018), Las Vegas (2020-21), Tennessee (2021), New England (2021) and Seattle (2021). Scott played collegiately at Frostburg State.

Williams was awarded off waivers to Miami on May 17, 2021. He played in one game for the Dolphins in 2021. Williams originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with New Orleans on May 11, 2021. He was a three-year letterman (2018-20) at Syracuse, where he played in 28 games with 15 starts.

Miami Dolphins make trade with Houston

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have acquired a 2023 sixth-round pick from Houston in exchange for tight end Adam Shaheen and a 2023 seventh-round pick.

Shaheen played in 28 games with 12 starts for the Dolphins since he was acquired in a trade from Chicago on July 26, 2020. During his five-year NFL career, Shaheen has appeared in 55 games with 25 starts, totaling 50 receptions for 509 yards (10.2 avg.) and seven touchdowns. He originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick (45th overall) by Chicago in the 2017 NFL Draft following a collegiate career at Ashland.

Miami Dolphins make roster moves

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed punter Sterling Hofrichter and waived punter Tommy Heatherly.

Hofrichter (pronounced hoff-rick-tur) was a seventh-round pick (228th overall) by Atlanta in the 2020 NFL Draft. He played in all 16 games for the Falcons his rookie season, totaling 56 punts for 2,381 yards (42.5 avg.) with 17 inside the 20. In 2021, Hofrichter spent part of the season on Tampa Bay’s practice squad and appeared in two games for the Buccaneers. He played collegiately at Syracuse.

Heatherly signed with Miami as an undrafted college free agent from FIU on May 13, 2022. He was a three-year letterman for the Panthers, playing in all 30 games from 2019-21. He earned first-team All-Conference USA honors in 2021.

Miami Dolphins activate Campbell

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have activated defensive back Elijah Campbell off the non-football injury list.

Campbell was awarded to Miami off waivers on Sept. 1, 2021 from the N.Y. Jets. He played in seven games with the Dolphins last year, totaling two special teams stops. He played in three games for the Jets in 2020. Campbell originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with Cleveland on May 4, 2018. He’s also made stops with the DC Defenders of the XFL and the Birmingham Iron of the Alliance of American Football. Campbell played collegiately at Northern Iowa.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have released/failed physical defensive lineman Adam Butler.

Butler played in all 17 games with one start for the Dolphins last season. He recorded 17 tackles (nine solo), 2.0 sacks and three passes defensed. Butler spent the first four seasons (2017-20) of his career with New England and has played in 80 career games. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with the Patriots on May 5, 2017. Butler played collegiately at Vanderbilt.
