Postgame – New England

S Jevon Holland (transcribed by the New England Patriots)

(On moving on to the next game) – “Yeah we got to win. That’s all it is, we just got to win the game. There’s nothing more to it, we just got to win.”

(On the season) – “It is what it is. That’s basically my mindset. You’ve got to win, that’s all it comes down to. Whatever you got to do, however you got to prepare. You’ve got to win.”

(On the injuries to the secondary) – “It’s been tough, but we’re professionals, and it’s kind of like the next man up. You’ve just got to do your job and you’ve got to fight with who you got to go to war with. So that’s basically the mentality.”

(On any problems with communication on the last Patriots touchdown) – “Stuff happens in the game pretty fast, and you’ve got to make adjustments. On that play it got the best of us. We needed to make adjustments and we couldn’t. We’ll go to the film and watch it to see what happened and we’ll be better from it.”

(On if the Patriots showed something that wasn’t on film in the last few weeks) – “There was nothing out of the ordinary. They played their game. They just executed when we had mishaps. We just have to be able to execute and go into the week and understand what our job is. Then come out here on the field and play the game, play the down for what it is and execute. They just capitalized on what we messed up at.”

Postgame – New England

WR Tyreek Hill (transcribed by the New England Patriots)

(On his reaction to the team losing five games in a row) – “It sucks man. I can’t explain the feeling. As a competitor you want to win all these games, especially games like this. I know I’ve been saying that we’re going to find a way to bounce back but at this point I’m going to put my faith in God, because right now, we are in a mud puddle. Our leaders are going to continue doing what they’re doing which is encouraging the younger players and rallying this team. We are going to be good because we control our own destiny.”

(On what happened on the interception where the ball bounced off his hands) – “I’m going to take that. They pay me a lot of money to make those plays so I just have to make those plays.”

(On how confident the team was with QB Teddy Bridgewater) – “Very confident. The team was overly confident. The first half we were moving the ball up and down the field doing whatever we wanted to. We obviously had certain possessions where flags and miscommunications kind of screwed us again, but that all starts with a belief. We have a young team, a lot of guys are still trying to figure out who they are, but we’ll get there.”

(On how it’s been the last five games for the team) – “Everybody has been good. We’ve been practicing fast, we’ve been practicing deliberate. The quarterbacks are slinging the ball around. It’s the NFL for a reason, you’re going against professional athletes on the other side of the ball. Our best players have to be better than their best players.”

Postgame – New England

RB Jeff Wilson Jr. (transcribed by the New England Patriots)

(On the disappointment of losing a close game) – “Especially when you have goals and you know you have talent, it’s very disappointing. Like I said it seems like we are singing the same tune every week but regardless of what happens, we can’t hurt ourselves at this time of the season.”

(On the change in the running game) – “It’s a situational game so regardless of the plan, you have things that happen unexpectedly, that you weren’t expecting. I mean you have to alter the game plan in order to keep the pace and keep the flow on how the game is going. It’s kind of what happened I believe, and we have to be able to roll with the punches and get back up.”

(On the momentum change in the game) – “No doubt. It felt like the game at the beginning stages we were playing complementary football. Defense was feeding off of the offense, and offense was feeding off of the defense and special teams was feeding off both, and visa-versa so I felt we were playing a complete and we just had some mental errors that you can’t have.”

(On losing five in row and having to win next week) – “That is just the bottom line and we will block out all of the outside. The media will come in and all the people that talk will come in and try and bash the team and rip the heart out, but this is the time we really just need to stay together, and focus, and keep fighting. I don’t think anyone is going to give up so I feel like we are going to come out and do what we are going to do and stare down everything in front of us.”

Postgame – New England

Head Coach Mike McDaniel (transcribed by ASAP Sports)

(What are your thoughts on today? How disappointed are you going into the final week of the season with the playoffs on the line?) – “Definitely didn’t expect this. It’s pretty frustrating, we’ve got a lot of guys laying it on the line. You want to get the results you feel like the team deserves and should get, and you come up short. That’s kind of the nature of football when you make critical mistakes with points scored off turnovers and some – I think we had a collection of penalties that really cost us, so those types of things will leave you with the type of result we were trying to avoid. We still have games to play. We have one in particular against the New York Jets that we have to respond to, and that’s what I’ll be focused on getting the team channeled towards. Because you go through tough stretches in seasons, you go through tough stretches in games, and we have to learn how to get ourselves out of that at some point in time.”

(Can you tell us what happened with QB Teddy Bridgewater? Did he get hurt when throwing the ball or when trying to make the tackle? Do you have any idea of the severity of the injury?) – “I don’t know the severity. I believe it was on making the tackle on the pick-six, but that’s something that we’ll find out more in the coming days.”

(After the start you had, how do you get your head around a five-game losing streak? What do you tell your guys to try to get out of it?) – “Well, you try to identify – the biggest challenge is that people have to deal with losing for over a month now, and trying to channel all of the desire, the want, the let-down into a productive direction. So you have to critically assess each and every game and say, ‘Is it one thing? Is it a bunch of things? What can you correct?’ It is definitely disappointing from my perspective, for the team, for the fan base, for everyone really involved, and you have to do something with it. You have to understand how we got to this position and how we make sure that we don’t return to a scenario where we can’t stop the bleeding, so to speak. I think guys have had opportunities to play. There’s been people that have made some tremendous plays and done very well with their opportunities on the field. There’s some guys that I think will feel in hindsight looking back on it that they could have done more. It doesn’t matter at this point – it’s all about responding. It’s tough for anybody to really put themselves out there and accept these types of defeats in consecutive order. But we play a tough game, and absolutely nobody will feel sorry for us, as they shouldn’t. We have to figure it out as a group collectively how to finish the season the way we started, in the win column and not in the loss column.”

(Personally how do you gather your thoughts after a game like this?) – “Oh, it’s tough for me. Typically, I go into the game believing in the people that I work with, believing in the players in the locker room, and this one was absolutely no different. My expectation is to prepare us to win, and so when we don’t, it’s definitely not fun. In this particular situation, I felt less sad and more angry just at how certain things transpired because I want desperately for everyone involved to get what I feel like they deserve, and when that’s short, I struggle not to start with myself. I think that will always be the case. But I think we’ll see on the tape that there’s a lot of people that could have done X, Y or Z that much better to win a two-point loss. We knew going into the game that we had to win the turnover battle, and that did not happen in all three phases because it’s not only not turning it over but it’s getting the ball back and creating turnovers. We were unable to do that, which we knew in this type of game was going to be critical. We’ve got to find different ways to get that message put forth and applied on the field, which is kind of Coaching 101.”

(Were CB Xavien Howard, T Terron Armstead or LB Bradley Chubb close to playing, any of those three?) – “Yeah, they all were working out pregame, and those three, all three weren’t really – between themselves and the medical staff, knew it wasn’t the best for the Dolphins to put them out there.”

(Every team has injuries, but when you’re down to the third quarterback, third or fourth left tackle, at one point all five projected starters in the secondary unavailable, my question would be is this sort of the most depth – is this the biggest challenge to roster depth that you’ve been a part of?) – “I’m sure it’s up there. I don’t really look at it in that way just because I trust the players that we have in the locker room, and we’ve won plenty of games with guys rising to the occasion and stepping in for starters that weren’t available. I’m sure that it would be up there. It feels in the moment like we are having to adjust the lineups more frequently than I can remember. Whether that’s the case, who knows? I know one thing; there’s not anybody in the locker room that is asterisking this loss because they know deep down that we were plenty capable of getting the job done and we didn’t.”

(It seems the offense has been really successful throwing the ball. Obviously QB Tua Tagovailoa didn’t play today, and you notably ran the ball a lot, specifically on first down, even with the Patriots’ injuries in the secondary. What led to that kind of shift in philosophy?) – “That was kind of going into the week, you play certain defenses, and the Patriots, I think more than anything, have scored a lot of points on defense. So trying to minimize the amount of time you put yourselves in situations where it plays to a defense’s strength is something that I think is important in terms of how you approach a specific defense. That was the case this season. Last time we played Buffalo, we kind of knew it was going to be a similar set of circumstances, that we were going to have to really make sure that we attacked the line of scrimmage and didn’t play to one of their strengths, which is late sacks and turnovers. We were able to do that with solid success at times, made some plays on third down, so it kept giving us some opportunities. But ultimately, it only takes one, which our guys know, and it’s hard to beat that team when they’re able to score on offense and defense.”

(What did you learn about yourself during this five-game stretch?) – “You learn a lot. I know that from the whole spectrum really, football nuances, how I really want to approach the team – these things are not standard set in stone for me. I try to always think critically of why I do whatever I do. I also do know that there’s a certain degree of problem solving that I enjoy about this profession and this job in particular. And I also know that it does give me confidence in a weird way because I’m motivated by trying to dig people out of tough spots, and I know it’s not something that I – you never know how these types of things are going to feel. You’re not excited about putting yourself in a position to (say), ‘OK, what’s it going to feel to lose five straight?’ But being involved in it, I know that this is kind of my niche in the world – for me to help get a group of guys out of this is totally my speed and something that’s very important to me, and I’m definitely up for the challenge.”

(When you were told that CB Xavien Howard, T Terron Armstead and LB Bradley Chubb weren’t going to play, was that sort of a process? Did they come to you all at once or one by one?) –  “It depends on the individual week. This one in particular, the workout was timed about the same time because we had juggling of actives that were consequential, depending upon if they were able to go or not. This one in particular – a lot of times it’s the head trainer that comes and speaks with me. This time, it was pretty ominous because it was the GM that came and told me that we were 0-for-3 with it. Those guys obviously would help any team, their contribution, but it wasn’t – their inactivation was not the reason we lost this game. I think we had all the ability to do so, and we didn’t.”

(You talked about problem solving; can you think back to your time in your career that you’ve had a situation like that that you’ve pulled out of it? What was that situation like?) – “There’s a countless number of them. The first one that comes to mind is in 2012, 3-6 with Robert Griffin III’s rookie season, and then we were able to pull it together and make the playoffs. We played Seattle. Then all the way back to just last season, I think we were behind the eight-ball, and there was some talk about next season, all the way – I think we were about 3-5. Then really the two times that I’ve been to the Super Bowl, at the end of the season there was a loss that you thought was grave, because it put you out of whatever scenario you thought was best for your team. Just regardless, there isn’t a season that goes by that you don’t have late-season turmoil. Typically, it doesn’t manifest itself in a five-game losing streak, but every year it’s different. But I do know one thing, that you end up finishing the season winning or beating the adversity or overcoming the adversity in one way, shape or form, or you succumb to it. That’s pretty cut and dry. There’s only one team that ends the season happy. The rest of them are lumped in a ‘Wish-I-could of-would of.’ None of that even really matters for this particular team. It’s a one-game season to really take all the lessons learned from this five-game losing streak and putting together something that the locker room and coaching staff is proud of as the regular season comes to a close. I’ll definitely channel some of those experiences, but I fully expect a hungry and well-intentioned team ready to go play the Jets next week for the regular season finale.”

Postgame – New England

QB Skylar Thompson (transcribed by ASAP Sports)

(What was it like for you today having to come in for QB Teddy Bridgewater?) – “Yeah, well, I feel like it’s kind of déjà-vu of the conversation we had at the beginning of the year. It’s never a situation that you want to have happen to get into the game. It’s tough to see Tua (Tagovailoa) go down with an injury last week and Teddy (Bridgewater) experience one this week, because those guys mean a lot to me. But I’ve got to be ready when my number is called. It’s frustrating because I want to win, and I think – I know everybody in this organization and in that locker room wants to win, and it’s frustrating. It’s frustrating whenever you just can’t get over the hump in some situations. There’s plays that I left out there that I wish I could have back, but one thing that I will always hang my hat on, every time I step in between the lines, I’m going to give it everything I’ve got and I’m going to fight my butt off to win. I’m going to keep grinding. I’m going to stick to what I’ve been doing and just trust the process, and that’s what this team has to do. I know it’s frustrating, it’s hard, but we’ve just got to have a short memory from this and come back and be ready to finish the season off next week at home.”

(The stakes are pretty clear next week. You guys have to win, obviously, to get into the playoffs. What’s your mindset going into next week?) – “I mean, the same mindset that I’ve had this whole year. It’s obviously – the situation for me has changed from week to week throughout the whole year, depending on the situation. But if it is me, I’m just going to approach it the way that I’ve approached it this whole season, and fortunately for me, I got a preparation versus the Minnesota Vikings as a starter. So if that is the case, then I’m going to know what that’s going to look like. I’m going to be able to even better prepare myself even more for what that week of preparation is going to look like for me. It’s still too early to say what that’s going to look like. But speaking for our whole team, like I just said, we have to have a short memory, and we’ve just got to – our backs are against the wall. There’s a lot of guys in that locker room, that’s where we’re at our best. Talking to the guys and hearing the guys’ stories of what they’ve faced in life, what they’ve gotten through to get to this point, what’s their ‘why’ for playing this game, we have those guys in the locker room. This is when you’re tested the most, when your backs are against the wall, this is when you’ve got to be at your best. That starts with me, that starts with everybody looking themselves in the mirror and putting their pride aside and being able to focus on doing their job, doing my job. We do that, we play for each other, you fight your butt off for the guy next to you, good things happen. That’s what we’ve just got to focus on doing.”

(Did you have a chance to warm up?) – “I got like two throws. It was quick, but it’s part of the job and part of the game. It’s here nor there, it’s part of it. But I did feel like, obviously, I wish I could have that pick back. It was very frustrating – it hurts. But I did feel like I settled in a little bit there late in the game and was seeing things clearly and distributing the football. Obviously it wasn’t perfect, but there’s obviously a lot of things that I’m going to be probably frustrated at watching. But a lot of – some good things to take away from it, as well.”

(What did you see on that interception?) – “Just missed the throw. Was trying to anticipate Tyreek (Hill) on an out cut and missed it inside. 100 percent my fault and just missed. Those are the worst ones because they’re in your control, in my control. But I’m going to own it, and I’m going to come back to work tomorrow and be ready to go. Just got to have a short-term memory playing this position, and that’s something that I’ve got to do with that. “

(With QB Teddy Bridgewater, it seems like every chance he gets unfortunately some sort of injury happens. Do you know how he took it and was he trying to fight to get back in the game?) – “I don’t know the details of what happened. Obviously, whatever happened prevented him from coming back in the game. But talking about Teddy (Bridgewater), man, I appreciate that guy a lot. Everything that – he’s helped me a ton since I’ve gotten here, and I don’t even know if he’s realized it. But he’s helped me a ton in all aspects, as a football player and in life with just perspective of what it takes to be a pro. I wanted him to go out there and do his thing today and come out with a win. It hurts. It hurts to see both times he’s gotten an opportunity this year, unfortunate things have happened to take him out of the game. One thing I do know is Teddy is going to bounce back, whatever that is, and he’s going to continue to be Teddy Bridgewater. I’m very, very grateful for him and hope everything is OK with that.”

(They were down three of their top corners today; were you trying to take advantage of that?) – “Yeah, we were definitely aware of that. It’s still fresh on my mind of kind of what took place there. Just my initial feelings coming off the field, it felt like they were there at the end were playing a lot of two-high shell soft and forcing me to throw underneath. I’ve got to go back and watch the film to see if there was some intermediate stuff that I possibly missed or whatever the case may be, but that’s what it felt like on the field is they were trying to keep everything underneath there. That could be a reasoning for them having some depth issues there at corner and playing umbrella type coverage and making us drive the football. But yeah, we were aware of that.”

(What did you take away from Head Coach Mike McDaniel’s postgame comments?) – “Like I said, everybody in the locker room wants to win, and it hurts when you lose. Just kind of what you guys were saying earlier; our backs are against the wall here. We’ve got to go win next week to get ourselves in the dance. That’s been our goal this whole year is to get to the playoffs. It’s come down to a situation where we have one game at home versus a divisional opponent and have a chance to do that. We’ve just got to continue to fight and continue to get better and have a short-term memory. I feel like sometimes just it’s human nature – when you are struggling, when you can’t get over the hump, it feels like you’ve got a monkey on your back a little bit. That’s just something that we have to continue to work through, keep fighting through and get over the hump. That starts with me, and I take a lot of responsibility for this one. I’m going to think about that interception quite a bit today. It hurts because when I get an opportunity, I want to help this team win and to do everything I can to do that, and that’s what this week comes down to is just keep fighting.”

(Not to overstate the obvious – you guys were 8-3, now lost five in a row. What have you noticed inside the team that’s happened now that you’ve lost five straight?) – “I know our mindset hasn’t changed. I feel like our preparation throughout the week is good and guys are locked in. I thought this past week was one of our best weeks of practices that we’ve had (with) guys bringing energy and staying positive and doing those things. I think it just comes down to, like I was saying, just having that fight, that dog in you – you’ve got to step up and make a play in times like this and trust the guys around you, trust the coaches, trust everybody that we’re all in this together and that we’re going to make a play. Don’t look to your right and don’t look to your left looking for somebody else to make the play. We’ve got to have that responsibility of, ‘I’m going to do my job. I’m going to do this.’ When we do that, good things will happen. It’s a process. It’s a process to work through. It’s tough when you lose five straight. I have all the confidence in the world that this locker room is going to do that because we’ve got the right guys in there and led by great coaches, too.”

Mike McDaniel – December 30, 2022 Download PDF version

Friday, December 30, 2022

Head Coach Mike McDaniel

(So obviously we haven’t seen QB Tua Tagovailoa, LB Bradley Chubb or FB Alec Ingold all week. Are they out Sunday?) – “Tua (Tagovailoa) is. The other two will be gametime decisions, much like most of my life. (laughter)

(And then we saw CB Xavien Howard on the injury report with a knee that surfaced yesterday, also T Terron Armstead besides the three other injuries, now has a hip, are they at all in question for Sunday? Or do you think both will play?) – “All players kind of fall under that umbrella. I just know that we’re going to see Xavien (Howard) actually practicing today.”

(And with T Terron Armstead he’s played through everything. Is the hip something that’s put him in doubt at all for Sunday?) – “It’s I think a lot of trickle-down effect. He’s a warrior, but that one falls under the same umbrella for him as well, where he’s going to push it until game time and see if he can give it a go. He knows that our team is best served when he’s out there, but he also knows that he has an obligation to the team because we do have other players that are very much capable that he doesn’t need to put himself in harm’s way. So that’s the balancing act that only he can really determine.”

(Adversity is opportunity. It’s a big mantra. Is this week sort of the biggest case of that? And did you establish that in the offseason for something like this?) – ”Well, you got to be careful what you wish for apparently. (laughter) No, I think it happens in varying degrees all the time really. It’s more acknowledging it that it’s not necessarily what you know in the present as what you think would be the worst-case scenario. It’s amazing what happens when you look at things in hindsight and how often you can say, ‘Wow, because of that, it really led to this.’ So we are in the midst of that. It’s been that way for what has been the month of December and you find out a lot about people. You find out a lot about your team that you’re working with, the players in the locker room, the coaches. Really you find – that’s where you can’t hide. Your true colors show and I’ve seen a team that has really diligently attacked the adversity by working through it. We had one of our favorite weeks of practice. The locker room is very tight and pushing forward, so I feel excited about seeing what they can do together on Sunday.”

(You mentioned before your favorite position is the defensive end or edge position. The Patriots have a couple of really good guys in Patriots LB Matthew Judon who leads the AFC in sacks and Patriots LB Josh Uche, who is having a breakout year. How would you describe their games?) – “Relentless. I think they have as much disruption as any players that we’ve seen this year into the play. They are guys that get a lot of production, two-and-a-half, three seconds into pass plays, that just really show how that whole defensive unit plays together. The back end is very sound allowing for one or two extra hitches for the quarterback in which they take advantage of routinely. So they’re an impressive group. They’re physical, but relentless is the thing that really stands out to me.”

(Have you had discussions in the past couple of months with your coaches about the idea of maybe putting WR Tyreek Hill and WR Jaylen Waddle back to return kicks with the idea of juicing up the return game a little bit? And if so, why was the decision made to stick with RB Raheem Mostert and WR Cedrick Wilson Jr.?) – “I think we feel that we’re using two offensive players that have very good dynamic skillsets currently, but all those things are always up for discussion. That’s one of the reasons Raheem (Mostert) is back there as the starting running back, is he gives us some breakaway juice that we’ve tried to play to. How successful that is, is a whole other story, but that’s always up for discussion. We’ve just been, as your team goes during the season, how reliant upon Tyreek and Waddle offensively we are, plays into it and how that’s going to affect the next series. So we are constantly debating that and it’s still up in the air within each and every game.”

(Is OL Brandon Shell in question for Sunday? We saw shoulder on the injury report that limited him yesterday.) – “I feel pretty good about him. He’s a tough guy, man and he had something pop up, but he’s been diligent in the training room and feel pretty confident that he’ll be there Sunday.”

(I’m not expecting an answer, in case you wanted to. But if you want to surprise us, will it be OL Liam Eichenberg or OL Rob Jones at left guard?) – “It could be one, two, both or neither. Everything? (laughter) No, I feel fortunate to that Rob (Jones) really seized the opportunity that he’s had. I think he’s put his best NFL tape on display. I think he continued to get better and will continually do what’s best for the team in our opinion. And that’s for the players to earn.”

(Do you have any update on QB Tua Tagovailoa? Has he improved? He’s still in protocol, I presume?) – “Yeah, he’s still in protocol and I just go day by day as instructed. I would say that he’s better than the day before, but I’m also trying to get a team ready to play this game and it really doesn’t do anybody any service to overtalk in this scenario where he’s got to be focused on his health and nothing else. So a lot of times in conversation with Miami Dolphins football players, Miami Dolphins football comes up with me, so we’re trying to stay away from that. And besides talking about MacGruber we’re keeping our topics minimal. (laughter)

(The league wires said to you all worked out Jack Coan and Kyle Lauletta yesterday. Was either signed to the practice squad?) – “Not as of yet. These are things – one of the reasons that I’m so happy, confident and love this working relationship that I have with Chris Grier and the personnel staff, is they make sure that they stay ahead of things and so there hasn’t been a signing. That doesn’t mean there won’t be.”

(QB Tua Tagovailoa’s brother talked at his bowl game yesterday about a lot of things but probably the two big takeaways were that everybody’s got an opinion and nobody, not even he, knows the specifics of everything that’s going on and happened in the lab and whatever. I know you’re focused on the week and getting your team ready, but how do you block out the noise when something like this – Tua’s brother is right – everybody does have an opinion. Everybody does have a ‘this should have happened’ or ‘what if’ or ‘this must happen now’ or ‘this should have happened then.’ How do you block out all that?) – “Diligently and relentlessly by I haven’t read or talked or had anything outside of doing my job with the people that I work with. So I have no idea what’s going on in the world. I think that’s the only way you have to kind of do it – absolutely – to do it the right way. And I think from an integrity standpoint, it’s very important for me to do everything for the right reasons and not have influences either way with whatever the situation is. So I’ve blocked it out by the best way that I know to do that. Absolutely. I haven’t been on the internet in a while now. So I have no idea what you’re writing about me. And nor will I. (laughter)

(After all the adversity that you guys have faced in the last month, why do you think the guys were able to have such a good week of practice? Does it come down to leadership within the group? Coaching staff? What is it?) – “I think it’s the locker room leadership, how much they’ve invested and how much they recognize that even on a specific team, locker rooms change every single year. This one is special to them. So I think they’re trying to do right by each other, because these relationships are real, and they feel convicted to fight for this team. So I would say it’s locker room driven wholeheartedly, and it’s very impressive from top down, leadership captains, leadership council down to really everyone contributing.”

(Tonight is the Orange Bowl. You have a few guys on the roster who played in that game a few years back, particularly DT Christian Wilkins. From his point back then participating at Clemson to now, how do you see his progression?) – “He’s taken a jump this year as a player, really recognizing how people look at him. Receiving that captain ‘C’ was a big deal, and you can really see how much that means to him each and every week. He is super professional, routine-oriented and is as consistent of a contributor as we have on this team. I think that’s a credit to him recognizing his opportunity within his career, what he’s capable of doing and how he refuses to be satisfied.”

(I don’t think we ever followed up on TE Cethan Carter and his health. Has he been OK? And him being on IR, was that just a roster spot decision?) – “That was something that doctors and Cethan (Carter) really decided that it was best served for his health to do so. So that was something that it was much less of me deciding anything rather than him and medical professionals choosing that being the best path for him.”

(What is your opinion on rivalries in the NFL? Your last two games are big games for the fans historically for the Patriots and Jets. What is your opinion? Do you think they are still relevant? Or do you see them as any other games? Are they special for you?) – “I think division games will always hold that common special place, because fan bases feel it firsthand. You play someone twice a year – that added familiarity gives just that much extra on top of all the history that I’m sure if you’re a 40-year-old Miami Dolphins fan, you have at least 30, if not more, years of bones to pick and vice versa. So I definitely value them, not just because of the energy and familiarity, but because winning your division is so important. Division games are so important. If you’re ever trying to (get) where you’re trying to go, it’s always through your division. So you have to stand tall in those games, and you know that where you’re trying to go, you have to have a good amount of success in those games for all your dreams to be realized.”

(In order to activate OL Liam Eichenberg, you had to put RB Myles Gaskin on IR. He was listed with an illness. Was it that? Was it something else or just a roster spot?) – “It wasn’t just a roster spot, he had something with his shoulder. But beyond that greyness of detail, I wouldn’t really be able to elaborate on. It was something that best served really Myles (Gaskin) to get on that road to recovery because it was something that was kind of plaguing him for a minute.”

RB Jeff Wilson Jr.

(I know these past few weeks have probably felt like a playoff atmosphere with so much at stake in these games. What’s it like going into New England, division rival against a top 10 defense overall?) – “It’s the same thing, especially with the way they’ve been playing and the way they carry themselves, we’re going to have to lock in. Like you said, it’s big time on details, big time on zero mistakes and killing yourself and come out and play ball because that’s especially with that defense strived off of, turning turnovers into touchdowns and giving their team points. So we’ve got to eliminate as much of that as possible and come out and be ready to play football.”

(When you guys took on the 49ers, I remember a lot of you guys talked about how well they just swarmed to the football. That’s kind of what jumped off tape. With the Patriots defense, what is it that kind of sticks out?) – “The same thing. Like you said, they’re always going for the ball. So you’ve got to be very conscientious of it every time you’re touching it, every time you’re carrying it, even when you’re thinking about it, because they go after the ball. And not only do they go after it, they come up with it. So ball protection and security is going to be very big and just honing in on our details. We’re going to have to rally behind them because they’re going to come out with a lot of fire. You’ve got to fire with fire and then just see what happens after.”

(I know there’s a lot of playoff scenarios out there. You guys won’t know until after the game is over. Does that kind of help when you don’t have to scoreboard watch? You guys can just lock in on what you’re doing?) – “I haven’t been worrying about the playoffs ever since we lost this last game. Like I’ve been telling everybody, this thing is a day at a time now because every day is precious and every day is cherished and every day you can learn something new. So instead of thinking about Sunday or the playoffs or what’s in store, we’re going to attack every day just like we did today. We’re going to come in tomorrow. The first thing we’ve got is Friday before we get anywhere else. So we got to come out, be on top of Friday and be ready to go.”

Special Teams Coordinator Danny Crossman

(Can you go over the fake punt that you guys stopped last week? What happened? What led to your success on that play?) – “It’s tendencies, coach’s histories and then the magnitude of the game a little bit. They were trying to make a play, and between the special teams coordinator and the head coach, a little bit of history in that situation of trying to make something happen. The guys did a good job, fortunately we were able to make the play and set ourselves up in good field position offensively. A big play in that situation.”

(Conversely, what would you say really led to the issues on the 93-yard kickoff return?) – “That’s a combination of that’s a very good returner who has had a lot of success getting back to the field and was able to make a great cut and get some guys out of their gap or trying to do too much, for lack of a better term, and then making a great cut. But there’s an illustration of a great returner. He did a really good job selling it, stuck his foot in the ground, got a guy out of the gap. It’s the same thing we talk about, or you guys talk about, when you talk to the defensive coaches. Covering kicks is like run defense and guys get – if you have gap integrity, you’re going to have a chance – a chance. If you don’t have gap integrity, something bad could happen.”

(Sometimes it’s hard for me to tell what’s a good block and a not good block, if it’s a clean block or an illegal block. Was that a cleanly blocked play?) – “There’s always some gray. Not to get too much into it, but any penalty, anything that I see, I always look at would I want that called if it was us. So that sometimes cleans things up, at least in my mind. There are some things that are egregious and it’s blatant. But I always just look at it in reverse, like if that was us, would I expect that to be called. To me, it was a very good cut by the returner.”

(I suspect you wouldn’t want anything called on your team.) – “(laughter) I’m a realist. There are things that need to be called. We had one called on us that I thought was a poor call, but at the same time, you see why the official would call it, even though it was a poor call. (It’s) some of the things that they look for and that’s what happens.”

(You mentioned tendencies at the start. Where do the Patriots fall in terms of likelihood to try to do something to catch you guys off guard?) – Well, I’m not going to get into a lot of that, but again, the head coach, who is a former special teams coach, they’re always outstanding in the kicking game. They do a good job of mixing things up. They have very good players. But everybody’s got some things that you look for that, not necessarily that you anticipate, but you’re aware of the possibility.”

(It looked like you guys attempted a squib kick at one point. Could you explain what the strategy was and how the execution…?) – “That was just a miss hit. Just a miss hit.”

(Is there any person who’s been lost on returns, do you think has been hurtful this year whether it’s TE Cethan Carter, whether it’s someone else? I know S Brandon Jones played only 27 special teams snaps before he went down. Whose absence has been hurtful?) – “Obviously losing a guy like Cethan (Carter) and then with some of the other injuries – offensively, defensively, with some of the transition of players, we had a little bit of a yo-yo there earlier in the year. It’s settled down a little bit the last four or five weeks. Anytime there’s injuries – that’s the thing, even on offense and defense, there’s a trickle-down effect. You lose a defensive back, then a defensive back who’s maybe playing five plays on defense, now he’s playing 35 plays on defense. You have a guy that’s playing five plays on offense and now he’s playing 30 plays on offense. So that has a trickle down, obviously in the kicking game. But losing Cethan, especially early in the year, because No. 1 he was a leader and a good player, so that was a loss. The rest that we had, that’s the game. There’s years that you are clean and you don’t have a lot of injuries, and then there are years that you have to go through stuff. Obviously, we all wish we could roll the same group of guys out there with that continuity and playing together. You’re always going to be more successful when you have that (than) when you’re moving people and changing people, but that’s part of the game. That’s what everybody goes through.”

(Obviously, DB Keion Crossen was the marquee special teams signing of the offseason. Has his snaps on special teams at all been impacted since he’s essentially become the third corner?) – “Without question. You look at the numbers, yes.”

(And more so on punt return? Kickoff return?) – “A combination. A lot of plays and a lot of phases, which good for him. But that’s what it takes – again, anything we’re always doing, we’re trying to win the game. Whatever it takes, whoever they need, let’s find a way to win the game. If he’s the best option, that’s the nature of this beast. Go play and we’ll figure it out.”

(At this time of the year, we know guys want to win and you guys are looking at a playoff berth. Do you have to talk to guys about just do your 1/11th, don’t try to do too much?) – “Without question, and that is a little bit of the nature of the beast. Go play good football, know what to do, know how to do it, do it to the best of your ability and that will give you a chance. As we all know, we’re playing good teams, too. So that’s the best way to give yourself an opportunity to be successful. Don’t make these games any more important in your mind than the ones you’ve already played. Do what you’re supposed to do, do it how you’re supposed to do it and give yourself a chance and then let the pieces fall where they may.”

(What’s been the most disappointing thing?) – “The fact that we’ve given up some big plays. Fortunately, like in this game, we give one up but we’re able to make one so it ends up being a wash. But the consistency – the next couple kickoffs they start drives on the 10 (-yard line), they start drives on the 12 (-yard line), they start drives on the 20 (-yard line). Three out of four, you’re good, but you can’t give up those chunks. It makes it hard. It puts the defense in a bad position. Again, fortunately we were able to make a play to put the offense in good field position, but you don’t want to play for a wash.”
