TE Jonnu Smith

(What do you think transpired when one of your leaders expresses his desire to want out after adversity? How does that make you feel?) – “I’m not going to speak for Tyreek (Hill) respectfully. Tyreek spoke for himself. I can only speak for myself. We’re all men. We all feel differently about certain things. We handle situations differently and rightfully so he handled the situation how he felt he should’ve handled it.”

(One thing that LB Bradley Chubb and DT Zach Sieler have talked about is players needing to hold themselves to a higher standard. Zach said earlier this year that was an issue. Players have to be on time, etc. Was that an issue where the team can improve? I’m not talking about every player obviously but some.) – “I would definitely say, definitely a lot more house cleaning rules we can clean up on. Is that going to equate to wins? It’s hard to say. You definitely need structure any time you’re striving to do something great. There’s a lot of things we need to clean up as a team. I’m speaking individually for myself that I can improve on and get better. And again, I’m just going to continue to speak for myself, but where we are as a team, like I alluded to it yesterday, I think we all know the foundation that was set. We’ve got a good foundation. We’ve just got to continue to carry that out and let the leaders in this locker room continue to stand on that and continue to relay that message throughout the 2025 season coming up.”

(You’ve spoken about having to go to FIU, being underrated and all. Some of the stuff has to drive a guy like you pretty crazy.) – “Nothing ever came easy for me. I like it that way, though. It’s made me a better man. It’s made me a better person. It’s made me more appreciative of the opportunities that I have. To always walk in humility, obviously as a man of faith, that’s one of the pillars of my everyday living. So just for me not taking a day for granted, being grateful for every opportunity that I have knowing that this is earned each and every day; this  opportunity that I have to wear that badge, to represent a great organization like this. Everybody has their own theories about life and how to move about it. The great thing about this game of football is so many people from so many parts of the country come together, even the world now, we come together and strive to reach one common goal. So we’ve kind of got to put all our world views and how we think morally; we’ve kind of got to put that aside and just come in here the eight or so hours that we’re here a day and just lock in and try to achieve one common goal. So I think that’s what’s beautiful about this game. I think we started doing that as time went on, but things just didn’t go the way we wanted it to.”

(Head Coach Mike McDaniel reminded us that emotions are high after a loss like that. Is there something to be said that could be attributed to WR Tyreek Hill’s demeanor?) – “Absolutely. The whole season, the whole season, just  kind of how things shaped out for us was emotional. It was a roller coaster. Again, everybody handles emotions differently. To each his own. You can sit here and say ‘I would’ve handled it this way,’ or ‘I would’ve done it that way.’ We’re all different individuals. In some way, shape or form that’s what makes us unique. So however you feel about it, however whoever feels that way about it, to each his own. We definitely have the right guys in this locker room. We’ve got a lot of the right guys. We had a lot of great leaders in this locker room. I’ve been around, I’ve been on a championship team. We didn’t win the championship, but we won. Even just getting there, I’ve seen the kind of camaraderie we had as a team and we’re getting there. We’re getting there.”

(Going back to Week 1. The way the season started with the incident outside the stadium to QB Tua Tagovailoa getting hurt in Week 2. How much of a mental challenge was this season for you guys?) – “It was tough. Like I said, it was a roller coaster up and down. Things didn’t go our way. Proud of where we came from. We fought. That goes back to the guys we have in here. Like 2-6 to 6-2, it’s a hell of a turnaround. It’s not easy any week to go from 0-1 to 1-1. Every week in this league is so valuable and so precious. We understand the impact and the grand scope of things when you’re playing each week. We dug ourselves out of a hole. The funny part about it is we dug a big hole early on so it was hard to get out of it, but we still came up out it. We still found our way climbing and fighting and scratching and crawling and giving ourselves a shot and opportunity the last week of the season when guys could’ve been thinking about vacation. We didn’t go out the way we wanted to, but we gave ourselves a shot.”

DT Zach Sieler

(Do you think there needs to be a higher standard, player-wise in terms of being at all things, being on time?) – “Absolutely, yep, I think so. Not to cut you off, but absolutely. And I think what (Mike) McDaniel does a great job of is preaching the player locker room and I think it needs to come from us as players and leaders and captains as well as the staff and get everyone here and get everyone working together from Day 1 in OTAs and camp and get things taken care of from Day 1, and take care of business to start fast next year.”

(Was that not done to the extent that it should have been by all the players?) – “There was things going on this year obviously, in the background that needed to get taken care of and some things could’ve been – we needed to be on our p’s and q’s earlier in the season and earlier in camp, and I think it’s a point of focus this year and we’re going to make sure we don’t mess that up again.”

(Having come from where you’ve been, some of this stuff has to drive you crazy. How tough is it though to speak up?) – “I think speaking up has been one of the things I’ve been working on my entire career. Me and Christian (Wilkins) talked a lot about that early on, obviously me coming from the waivers and kind of not doing much in the NFL early on. Like I told Barry (Jackson), it took me five years to get 10.0 sacks and two to get 20.0, so it’s just one of those things where I’m a leader on this team, I’m a veteran, I have my name now and to speak up with guys like (Bradley) Chubb and Calais (Campbell), (Emmanuel) Ogbah, (Jalen) Ramsey. All these guys on defense, we need to make sure that we’re holding everyone to a standard to be here from Day 1 to work as a unit and stay on top of things early on so that we’re not trying to play catch-up and we’re starting the season fast and we’re not playing from behind the eight-ball.”

(What was your reaction to WR Tyreek Hill yesterday saying he was opening the door for his future? I don’t know if you so those comments.) – “Yeah, I saw them. I think everyone has their own voice and if that’s what he wants to say, that’s what he wants to say. I have all the respect for him as a player. If that’s how he feels, that’s how he feels. So we’ll leave it at that.”

(Is it disappointing though when you guys are playing hard to the end, he’s not in in the fourth quarter and the first sign of adversity, he’s like “I’m out of here”?) – “I don’t know how the game went. I was on defense and I wasn’t watching the offense. I’m making our corrections so I don’t know. I haven’t even watched it yet to be honest with you, but yeah. Obviously, it’s a knee-jerk reaction. That stuff happens and I don’t know what happened. I’m not going to speak for him or speak on that. That’s his own decision, but I know as a team that we need to stay focused this year on making sure everyone’s here and making sure we’re on time and we’re focused on winning it all next year and making the corrections from this season going into OTAs and camp this year.”

(The other thing is Head Coach Mike McDaniel and General Manager Chris Grier are coming back. What are your thoughts on the coach and the GM that you’ve been here with?) – “I think those guys, I love those two. We had an amazing, just speaking of this year, an amazing rookie class coming in – Chop (Robinson), (Malik) Washington, (Jaylen) Wright, Storm (Duck). To come and do what they’re doing was incredible, so really excited to see that rookie class grow and everybody – players, coaches, everyone as a staff grow. I think we learned a lot this season and last season and hopefully this next year is the step we need to take to win it all.”

(How has Head Coach Mike McDaniel grown as a leader, as a head coach? Seeing him from his first year to Year 3?) – “Yeah, I think he’s always continuing to grow, just like we all are. If you’re not growing, you’re dying. And I think being comfortable with the uncomfortable is a big thing around here that we focused on too late, and I think now we have, sadly, to look back in from the outside in now. But hopeful we’ll go into next year kind of making those corrections on what we didn’t get done, what we need to get done and what we need to focus on as a team, as players and coaches.  Responsibility falls on all of us, right? So take it into this next season, get after it and holding everyone accountable, earlier on.”

(Almost 24 hours to reflect here sort of, what are the emotions today as you guys clean out the lockers?) – “I think there’s a balance of frustration, disappointment and a little bit of sadness, too, but also a little bit of happy heart knowing that we were able to learn a lot about each other, the guys in this locker room. It’s always a blessing to be able to make out a season healthy personally, but then as a team obviously not achieving what you wanted to, learning a lot along the way, sharing – I’m looking at these lockers and the names right now and a lot of them are going to change. A lot of them are going to be new. Knowing that the 2024 Dolphins were what we were, underachieved definitely from our goals and our expectations, but man, the way that a lot of guys fought all the way to the end to the very last game with all the things that we went through internally as a team and then obviously the opponents that we played, definitely hold your head up high knowing that we gave our best effort till the end.”

(You’ve been in a locker right next to WR Tyreek Hill. Were you surprised when he seemed to indicate he wanted to leave Miami?) – “I think Tyreek (Hill) is an emotional guy and he’s a competitor like a lot of us are. You get to know a guy like that over a few seasons. I’m upset that things had to be shared the way they were, but at the end of the day, I have a lot of respect for him, obviously sharing a lot of time in the lockers with him. The practice field, the game field, just seeing his light and his energy; he’s a really great teammate that I’ve had the fortune to play against and then play with as well. I think a lot of guys were emotional after the game so I’m going to take that with a grain of salt. Obviously we’re going to continue to have conversations, but he’s a great competitor, great teammate, and yeah, we’ll see what the offseason brings.”

(After the game Chairman of the Board/Managing General Partner Stephen Ross made it clear that General Manager Chris Grier and Head Coach Mike McDaniel would be returning. How pleased are you knowing that these guys will still be here next year to try to do this again?) – “I think that some consistency in learning and improving, I think there’s going to be a lot of intentional improvements, a lot of intentional changes made this offseason. I think it gives confidence to the guys that are going to be in this locker room knowing that we have a clear vision. We’ve learned a lot over the past couple years and I know not a whole lot of fans might want to hear that, but at the same time the players in the locker room and that consistency, I think will bode well for us. I think any time you change just to change probably doesn’t make the most amount of sense and understanding that we have a lot of confidence in the guys in the room to be able to solve problems, to continue to solve problems and figure that we have the awareness that what we’ve experienced this year will serve good for the future of the organization. I think that all breeds positivity moving forward, and I think that we’ve definitely laid a lot of bricks down that we can grow off of and we know what it takes to be successful down the stretch.”

On his end of season reflections…

There are a lot of things that we can be proud of as a team, a lot of things that we’ve overcome. I am very proud of us still coming into Week 18 and giving ourselves a chance to compete in the playoffs. It didn’t go our way but we came out here and we fought and it still didn’t go our way. It’s the NFL, it’s a very competitive league and unfortunately we didn’t meet the expectations and the standard that we set out. It’ll hurt, but this is a great lesson in life that what defines a man is the failures and not the success. Just speaking for myself individually, I look back on what I could have done better and the things that I can improve on to continue to help us get to where we go. The culture that was laid was a great culture and is a great culture. We have a lot of guys that bought into that culture and that’s why we were able to crawl ourselves out of the hole we were in. Nevertheless, obviously we didn’t get to where we wanted to go but life goes on. I’ll continue to be proud of this team, proud of this organization and proud to be a Dolphin and I’m definitely looking forward to next season.

On if the team became aware of the Denver-Kansas City score midgame…
It’s kind of human nature, you just look at the jumbotron regardless so it’s kind of in your face. To kind of know that things were getting out of reach, you just got to put it in the back of your head and go out there and play as hard as that may seem. We represent, like I said, the city of Miami. Obviously we want to go out on a winning record, didn’t get it done but we fought. Like I said, I’m proud of this entire team. We got guys, and he (DE Calais Campbell) just walked in, I’ll continue to say it again Calais Campbell to me is the standard of what you want in a teammate. You got guys like that battling, you don’t really even hurt as much for yourself or feel as much for yourself but it’s those guys that have given so much to this game and have just done it the right way for 15, 16, 17-plus years in this league and you want to see them go out right because in the football sense they deserve it. It also brings a lot of perspective for me to look at myself in the mirror, to appreciate the way things so happen to play out each and every day in my career. Guy (Campbell) plays 17 years, that’s a lot of favor from the Lord, blessed with a lot of healthy years and longevity and it’s something that I aspire to be. Again, you’ve got guys like that, Po (S Jordan Poyer) and T-Stead (LT Terron Armstead) I don’t know the outcome of what is going to be for them but you know guys like that are kind of on their way out so you want to do it for them.

On if he feels the team changed their gameplay once they were aware of the Chiefs-Broncos score…
No. I thought we fought, especially speaking individually for myself. I went out there and put my standard of football out there. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but I fought and I think every guy would get up here and say that they fought. Didn’t go our way, things got out of reach. They’re a good football team, they’ve always been. Their record didn’t show it but they have a Hall of Fame quarterback (Aaron Rodgers), always had a solid defense, they’re a good football team. We just came up short today.

Calais Campbell – January 5, 2025 (Postgame) Download PDF version

On the way this season ended…
Tough ballgame. Obviously, we want to win the ball, but only one team gets to the end of the year happy. Whoever wins the Super Bowl. Everybody else is feeling how we’re feeling right now. The season was a rollercoaster. We had opportunities. We all knew them and wanted a season win. Guys fought hard. I am proud of the guys for that. Nobody quit. We’re all dealing with different types of injuries and just the way the ball bounces and stuff, we just kept fighting. I am proud of my guys for that. I always tell the guys when it’s a draw it matters, but what really matters is how you play in your head. You’re not going to win them all. Not much teams have done that, but today was a tough one. It would have hurt a lot more if the (Kansas City) Chiefs would have won. The end of the season just is what it is.

On if he has thought about if this is his last game…
Well, you can think about it a little bit, but I haven’t made a decision on if this is my last game or not. I tried to play this game as if it was my last. I tried to leave it all out there, which is crazy because obviously we didn’t play (well) and (to) have something going on just was, I surprised myself that I was able to go out there and still be effective. A little bumpy a couple of times but nothing too bad. I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s going to be my last game. I know that it was fun to go out there and compete. Obviously, I wasn’t able to do it in the right fashion, but we competed against one of the best to ever do it, (New York Jets QB) Aaron Rogers. Really, (New York Jets WR) Davante Adams, they’ve got some good players over there, but Aaron is a guy I admire the way he plays the game. The points he’s made all through his career, touchdown match-up against him, and he seemed like he fit this battle. He played a heck of a game, but to answer your question I haven’t put a lot of thought into it, like I don’t process in the season. I feel like I could still play some good football, which is good, but I’ve got to take the time to decide if I want to go through the process to prepare for this again. It takes a lot, but we’ll see. I can’t make a decision today. I’ve got to go through the process and whenever that time comes, we’ll see.

On what his process to decide if he will play next season looks like…
Well, the first step is let the body recover and see how it recovers and see if I can feel good. These last couple years I kind of surprised myself like, ‘oh, I still feel pretty good’. You know, but by Super Bowl and come March I’m like I feel kind of good, it feels kind of weird just sitting around, let me just go to the gym a little bit, but then it’s the family stuff. Kids getting older, and this game there’s just so many sacrifices you have to make to be good at it and so, you kind  of have to make a decision. I’ll talk with the family and see if I want to continue to make those sacrifices, but it’s definitely a process though. First step is health. Second step is communication with the family and just if the desire is still there to go through what we go through. We all go through fire. I don’t want to ever be a guy that just goes out there. I want to be a difference maker. I want to be a difference maker if I’m going to be out there, but I still think I can be a difference maker though. Today I still felt like I was a difference maker. There’s time between now and then though.

Tyler Huntley – January 5, 2025 (Postgame) Download PDF version

New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins | 1-5-25

Miami Dolphins QB Tyler Huntley (transcribed by the New York Jets)

On how he would categorize the ending of the season…

That’s a way you don’t want to go out. I know I had some costly turnovers today. That’s not how we wanted to end the season. We work all season to work on ourselves, bettering ourselves in all aspects of the game, defense coming together, our run game, pass game, complimentary, everything, all of that came up short. We just came up short.

On why this start did not go as smoothly as his last one…

It’s just one of them days. It’s cold, slick ball. It played a big factor. But, given that, we’ve got to be ready for situations like this. Coming down to the last game of season, however many degrees it is out there, we’ve got to be ready to come out and play.

On not converting an opportunity early in the game and if he sensed the game would be a struggle…

That’s a division game. They’re going to come out to play. They just did a good job on defense. They did a good job. They had a nice little plan for us. And we just didn’t take advantage of all our ops. Definitely, we’ve got so many plays that we want back, but all we could do now is learn from them.

On whether he was aware of Denver leading in their game against the Chiefs…

I was too mad about how our game was going to even focus on what somebody else had going on. Just tried to come back late in the game, and it just didn’t come.

On whether he considered these last two games as an audition to become the team’s backup quarterback moving forward…

Yeah, definitely. I just really was trying to get this team some wins late down in the season, keep our playoffs hopes alive. But yeah, definitely, that’s all I was trying to do.

On how QB Tua Tagovailoa was on the sideline…

Man, he was good. When I came off, he was the first one to tell me that the balls were slick, and I was the one throwing them so it’s good he knows exactly how the game goes. Just coming to the sideline and be able to talk it out with him, it’s always good.

On whether he was aware of why WR Tyreek Hill was not playing in the fourth quarter…

Well, from my knowledge, I already knew he was kind of a little bruised up coming into this game. When you’re a great player like that, you can’t run fast all the time. Sometimes it hurts. So that’s probably what happened, but we’re too in tuned into the game, trying to just rally at the end.

On whether he felt the cold was a factor in this game…

I’m not saying the cold was a factor, but it definitely was cold. But no, that’s football. We know we’re coming down late in the season, it’s going to be cold. We’re not in Miami.

Mike McDaniel – January 5, 2025 (Postgame) Download PDF version

New York Jets vs. Miami Dolphins | 1-5-25

Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel (transcribed by the New York Jets)

How do you compartmentalize the season ending…
Yeah, it’s extremely disappointing. I think, none of us were approaching this year thinking 8-9 was good enough. This was an important game for us to just handle our business from a tonality standpoint, unable to undo the previous misgivings of the season and we didn’t do it. Yeah, it’s disappointing to say the least. So, you take that for what it is, and then you have to take hard looks at a lot of things which we’ll begin that process tomorrow.

On WR Tyreek Hill saying he wants out from the organization…
You know I think in regard to things that are stated, I guess it would be second-hand – for me, I hadn’t heard that but just in general emotions are high especially after a game like that. But there will be conversations that will be direct in the next couple days which is kind of the process of the end of season meetings. I think, obviously, there’s a lot of power in having a team that wants to play together and go for a common goal, so that is inherent, but I’m not going to put too much weight on second-hand, postgame disappointment statements. We’ll see how the next couple days progress with those conversations with him and I.

On WR Tyreek Hill not playing in the fourth quarter…
I was informed that he was unavailable right before a drive. I was not informed that it was a new injury, and I think at that point of time my focus was on the players and I didn’t take the time to go and try and figure out more into that. There were guys on the field that were competing, and we were trying to win a game, so my focus was there.

On if Hill pulled himself from the game…
I was informed he wasn’t available, and I didn’t really have the time to dig more into that and we’ll see what comes of that after watching the tape and talking to coaches and the training staff.

On who told him Hill was not available…
It was discussed by the coaching staff on the headset and the play clock was running, so I moved on and called plays for people that were out there.

On if he’s been informed if he’ll be back next season by ownership…
Yeah, my full expectations are to be back. I’d prefer to keep our conversations to our conversations, this isn’t really the platform for it but that’s my full expectation. Really you focus on you have to make stuff meaningful, and if you’re going to be 8-9 and fall short of your goals you have to find reasons why and make sure that those are not the same mistakes that you have moving forward. So, yes, my full expectation is to be back.

On if he expects GM Chris Grier to be back with the team the next season…
Yeah, my full expectations are our relationship will continue to be strong and a working relationship for sure. You’ll be able to ask pointed questions as the week, I’m not sure if it’s tomorrow or the next day, whatever day the end of the season press conference is with him and I.

On if the team was impacted by seeing the score of the Denver game on the scoreboard…
No, I was very focused on the game. I was made aware that they were showing the score and highlights from the game during the game, and I think as a team, we were really focused on beating the Jets. Individually, I’ll get more information and kind of get a feel when I watch the tape if anyone was affected, but overall, it was a group that was trying to win a game and lost it.

On Tyreek Hill not being available in the fourth quarter…
I’m not going to – my response, it would be unfair for me to match emotion with emotion. Right after a game when your season ends, when you’re fighting for it to extend, and with the full belief that you have the ability for that to happen, I’m not going to make a rash judgement on something that, again, it’s a little cloudy in the heat of the moment for multiple reasons. So, clarity will be found, and you do move forward with conviction as a football team, and I’ll look forward to having conversations with him this week.

On how far away he feels the team is from AFC playoff teams like the Chiefs, Bills, and Ravens…
I think it doesn’t really matter how I feel because my job isn’t to have feelings. I think the biggest thing is that there’s a lot of things that we’ll be able to reflect upon in the coming days, and today was about the team and the game. I think that will be a very fair question to ask during the week, just because, again, I try not to have wholesale reflections. I think that’s unfair to, whether it’s a plus or a minus, wholesale reflections postgame. I’m really more comfortable talking about the game we just lost.

On if Tua was close to receiving medical clearance for the Playoffs…
I think that was a fair estimation. If he could have played today, he would have played. From the medical standpoint, he was not cleared with reason. There weren’t precautions, it was that he was not available. He really wanted to play; I really wanted him to play. The hope was the season extends longer, and his availability would be real. So, I know that hope was held by him. I obviously hope he plays every game. You can count me into that hope. We had to win a game to get there, regardless of the opponent or the other games and regardless if, it didn’t matter who won the Kansas City-Denver game if we didn’t win. So, our focus was there and we didn’t achieve that.

On his immediate thoughts on what this team needs to improve on…
I think I’ll be super fired up for you to ask that question in a couple days. It’s not because of anything, I don’t feel like it’s responsible on my part to just spew what I’m feeling or thinking right now. I’ll probably have some strong convictions, but now is not the time or place. I feel like that would be irresponsible on my part to throw something out and potentially ask you guys for take- backs.

On Snoop Huntley’s performance…
I think it wasn’t up to his nor I’s expectation to start the game. There was some stuff that I feel like he has been pretty routine on that turned into un-routine. I did think that he competed and found ways to make some plays in the second half, but ultimately, the story of the game, in my opinion, it felt like we found success in the latter half of the season playing complementary football and this felt anti-complementary. We got a bunch of stops early in the game, and when that was occurring, we couldn’t get the ball in the end zone or score points. In the second half, we were able to put together some drives and we didn’t get the stops. Ultimately, the success that this team had found, that formula for three-phase complementary football, it just wasn’t there for us today, turning the ball over numerous times, we got an early takeaway but ended up severely in the minus. You’re going against the gods of football if you’re trying to win games severely in the minus. So, that’s kind of the way the game ended up.
