Postgame – Detroit Lions

Miami Dolphins DT Akeem Spence (transcribed by Paige Jefferson)

(Your defensive line has obviously had a bunch of injuries. Now today the offense got banged up pretty good. At some point, do you just shake your head as what’s going to happen next here?) – “No. It’s football. Injuries happen and guess what? It’s the next-man-up mentality and we’ve been that all throughout the season.  We’ve had games where we had two guys go out on the defensive line (and) guys picked it up. We just have to continue to step up, continue to make plays and guys just have to keep believing. Keep believing in each other and keep believing in this team. It’s one loss. We have a game come Thursday night and we need everybody. Everybody needs to get healthy, do whatever they need to do come Thursday night and find a way to get a W.”

(I know you guys say ‘next man up’ but what goes through your mind when you see your guys going down like that?) – “We’ve got the next man up. I’m not a trainer or anything. I pray for my guys when they go down that everything is a short, quick turnaround as far as an injury and anything like that. You have to believe in the next man up because he’s our teammate and that’s the next guy we believe in. We have to continue to believe in every guy in this locker room and continue to get it done.”

(How disheartening is a 71-yard run? You’ve had good moments a lot this year but that…) – “It’s disheartening but it happens all of the time in this league.  Like I tell everybody, to play run defense it’s not just seven guys up front, eight men in the box. It takes all 11. These guys are big running backs but at the same time, they have home run speed. We have to tackle these guys in bunches. Our corners aren’t that big, so d-lineman, we have to get out to stack and help those guys. Linebackers, everybody. It takes everybody.”
