CB Xavien Howard

(Can you tell us what happened on your interception last game?) – “It was just a great call from the defensive coordinator (Matt Burke). I just took advantage of the opportunity that I had.”

(What was your read on that particular play? What was your assignment?) – “The read … I was in the flats in a little bit of a soft squat, so I was in the flats. Really, it was just reading the quarterback and looking for somebody to come across. I didn’t know he was going to throw the ball exactly right to me, but I just took advantage of it.”

(Were you disappointed not to be able to make it a pick-six?) – “Yes, everybody has been getting on me about the pick-six. (laughter) Next time when I get the ball in my hands, I’m going to make something happen with it.”

(They said on the TV broadcast that you’ve had five interceptions in your last seven games. What do you think is the key to increasing your interception total? Why is it happening more?) – “I’m just taking advantage of an opportunity that a coach gives us and just being in the right position at the right time. Really (I’m) just going out there and balling and being comfortable.”

(What does the third preseason game mean to you in terms of a difference from the first two because it is the one where you game plan a bit more and play a bit more like it’s a ‘game week.’) – “It doesn’t matter how many reps I get out there. It’s another opportunity to get better and (I) just (want to) take advantage of it.”

(Does this game have a different feel to it?) – “I treat every game exactly the same. It doesn’t matter which game, preseason or a little scrimmage we’re having. It doesn’t matter. I’ve got to take advantage of it when I’m on the field.”

(We don’t want to ever criticize the officials but it looked like you had tight coverage on the pass interference. Is there anything that you maybe did too much or was it pretty good?) – “I’ve been physical at the line. I saw it on film … At first I thought it wasn’t the right call but when I looked on film and looked back at it, I jumped a little bit early before the ball came. It was close to me. I respect the call.”

(What have the coaches told you about … I’m guessing the coaches would prefer that you lean towards the side of being too tight than the opposite, right?) – “Right.”

(What do the coaches tell you about how tight to play?) – “We really just (want to) have tight coverage. It doesn’t matter if the ball is away from you. Every time I’m on the field (I just want to) be close and tight and really just play.”
