Miami Dolphins In Collaboration with Columbia University and Boys & Girls Club of Broward County Host Columbia Girls in STEM Initiative for Boys & Girls

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. –The Miami Dolphins teamed up with Columbia University and Boys & Girls Club of Broward County to host the Columbia Girls in STEM Initiative for Boys & Girls from July 15 – 19. Local youth of Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County united at Hard Rock Stadium to participate in a week-long course of programming consisting of advanced mathematics, problem solving, college skills and mentor speakers.

“The Miami Dolphins are proud to be part of this investment and development in our community’s young men and women, helping them become more educated and better community citizens,” Miami Dolphins Vice President and Chief Information Officer Kim Rometo said. ”In providing Hard Rock Stadium as the hosting facility as well as mentors from vendor partner companies and a variety of departments within the Dolphins’ organization, we hope to provide a leveled playing field for these youth that will inspire and support their future endeavors.”

The event incorporated a mentor luncheon with Dolphins front office staff. Additional components included academic courses with participants from Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County and representatives from Columbia School of Professional Studies. The mentorship opportunity concluded with an ice cream social.

The Columbia Girls in STEM Initiative for Boys & Girls, which was launched by Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies, is designed to help high school students with interests in STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Math) studies in college and ultimately help them prepare for careers with confidence in these fields. Columbia University School of Professional Studies sponsors similar programs in San Francisco, Washington, D.C. and New York.

“We are proud to partner with the Miami Dolphins to host the Columbia Girls in STEM Initiative, for a fourth consecutive year, in South Florida. The innovative program provides talented and high-achieving young students access to academic and career opportunities otherwise not available to underserved students,” Columbia University Dean of the School of Professional Studies Dr. Jason Wingard said. “We look forward to supporting this cohort of young leaders throughout their careers and demonstrating an effective model for closing the talent pipeline gap.”

Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County is committed to providing programs in the areas of character and leadership development, educational enhancement, career preparation, health and life skills, cultural arts and sports, fitness and recreation. Partnering with the Columbia Girls in STEM Initiative further establishes Boys & Girls Club’s mission to inspire and enable young people and provide them with the resources to succeed.

These efforts and initiatives align with the organization’s goal to level the playing field through the power of teamwork to inspire a healthier, more educated and united South Florida community. Dolphins Chairman of the Board & Managing General Partner Stephen Ross and Dolphins players created the FOOTBALL UNITES™ program as a way to bring positive social change. The Miami Dolphins organization believes it is important to be inclusive of the diversity and aware of the intersections that make up South Florida, uniting groups of different races, genders, sexual orientations, identities, abilities and faiths around the power of football. These programs connect to the NFL’s Inspire Change platform, showcasing the collaborative efforts of players, owners and the league to create positive change in communities across the country and work with RISE – the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality – to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice and improve race relations.
