Miami Dolphins Host PLAY 60 Day at NFL Youth Education Town (YET) Lester H. White Boys & Girls Club

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Through a grant provided by the NFL and NFL Foundation, the Miami Dolphins hosted a PLAY 60 day at the NFL YET Lester H. White Boys & Girls Club. Dolphins defensive end Andre Branch, cornerback Xavien Howard, cornerback Tony Lippett, cornerback Bobby McCain, safety T.J. McDonald and wide receiver Kenny Stills and alumni Troy Drayton and Twan Russell unveiled new sports equipment to elementary and middle school students to promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle and encourage at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The children also received a Play 60 t-shirt, Dolphins giveaways and dinner.

“It felt amazing seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces and being able to give back to the community,” said Branch. “It’s a pleasure, it’s an honor, for them to have us out here and gift them with the equipment. Seeing the kids play with it was just one big blessing.”

“The Play 60 event was a fun filled day for our members and staff. The members were ecstatic about being able to participate in an event with the Miami Dolphins at our facility, but were even more excited when the players and staff announced the donation of equipment,” said NFL YET Lester H. White Boys and Girls Club Program Manager Nicole Melendez. “Our members played for hours with the equipment and players without even skipping a beat and truly enjoyed themselves. They are very excited to put everything to use! The Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County are beyond grateful to have been a partner in this event. Thank you to the Miami Dolphins and everyone involved in putting this event together.”

Eaton and the Miami Dolphins to award a free Ephesus LED Sports Lighting System to South Plantation High School’s Paladin Stadium

MIAMI GARDENS, FL – FEBRUARY 26, 2018 — The Miami Dolphins and power management company Eaton today announced that South Plantation High School has been selected as the winner of the joint community programming initiative – “Light Like the Pros.”  As a result, South Plantation High School’s Paladin Stadium will receive a free state-of-the-art Ephesus LED sports lighting and control system valued at more than $100,000. Miami Dolphins alumni Troy Drayton and Twan Russell and mascot T.D. were on hand to surprise South Plantation with the news.

“We are excited to provide the players and fans at Paladin Stadium with an Ephesus LED sports lighting system, like the one at Hard Rock Stadium, in time for the 2018 fall sports season,” said Mike Lorenz, president, Eaton’s Ephesus Lighting business. “We hope that by showcasing our innovative technology at Paladin Stadium, the entire South Florida sports community will see the many benefits of LED sports lighting, including superior control and dramatic energy savings.”

There were many deserving high schools in both Broward and Miami/Dade counties that participated in the essay contest administered by the Miami Dolphins Foundation and sponsored by Eaton during the fall.  South Plantation High School’s essay demonstrated a need for a new sports lighting system due to the numerous limitations of its current system as well as an enthusiastic community that supports both athletics and academics.

South Plantation High School, with an enrollment of 2,400 students, is Florida’s only Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration Magnet Program and it ranks as one of Broward County’s leaders in community outreach, diversity, and leadership development.  Less than a decade ago they helped lead the charge to have lacrosse included as a varsity sport at nine area middle schools and high schools who also play their games at Paladin Stadium.  Additionally, the South Plantation football team broke barriers in 2012 by becoming the first school in the state to have a female quarterback play and complete a pass in a varsity game.

Paladin Stadium also serves as the home field for Stranahan High School in Ft. Lauderdale, a school without a stadium, and as a result, the lights serve double-duty during the football season. This high-usage has resulted in numerous fixtures being out and leaving dark spots on the playing surface.  Due to its antiquated scheduling system and numerous Florida weather delays, the lights have gone out several times in the middle of games, requiring an additional 20-minute delay to cool down and restrike the metal halide lights.  This has resulted in South Plantation being forced to overschedule the lights, adding stress on the system and wasting energy.  In contrast, Eaton’s Ephesus LED sports lighting system can be monitored remotely, programmed from an app and instantly turned on and off with the push of a button.

“Congratulations to South Plantation High School for winning the ‘Light Like the Pros’ program,” said Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications and Community Affairs Jason Jenkins. “Eaton’s Ephesus LED Sports Lighting System will provide an excellent solution to better illuminate Paladin Stadium, extending the opportunity for South Plantation’s athletes and the community to practice and compete without limitations.”

Eaton’s Ephesus All Field Series provides high schools, colleges and municipalities with a high-quality, cost-effective, versatile and controllable outdoor LED sports lighting solution. Engineered to satisfy customers’ specific needs, its multiple mounting options, low weight and low Effective Projected Area (EPA) make it one of the first LED fixtures designed to easily retrofit into existing sports lighting infrastructure to dramatically reduce installation costs. The enhanced engineered optics efficiently deliver uniform light on the field to significantly reduce unwanted spill light and sky glow. Typically, a facility that switches to an Ephesus LED lighting solution will virtually eliminate maintenance and reduce energy costs by 70 percent over typical legacy sports lighting systems.

Eaton’s Ephesus LED lighting solutions are at sports and entertainment venues of all sizes across North America. Hundreds of facilities have made the switch to Eaton’s LED sports lighting system including: Hard Rock Stadium (Miami Dolphins); PNC Park (Pittsburgh Pirates); Bridgestone Arena (Nashville Predators); United Center (Chicago Bulls and Blackhawks) and the historic Martinsville Speedway in Virginia — the first NASCAR track with LED lighting.

Miami Dolphins Team with 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project to Host Police and Youth Conference at Hard Rock Stadium

Miami – The Miami Dolphins today partnered with the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project to host a conference at Hard Rock Stadium designed to promote positive interaction between youth and law enforcement. The conference featured more than 600 high school students and law enforcement from jurisdictions throughout South Florida.

The group assembled also took a moment to honor law enforcement and first responders for the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last week.

“The best part of this is to see the tension relaxed between the police officers and our young men,” Congresswoman Frederica S Wilson said. “In these workshops, the police and youth reverse roles to learn each other’s responsibilities, and how to respect each other and cut that tension. To have the Dolphins, our hometown team, involved as well, and have them teaching a lesson to the children is just phenomenal.”

Several criminal justice and law enforcement agencies were on hand for the day, including Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police, the South Florida Chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), Broward Sheriff’s Office, City of Miami Police Department, Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, Miami Gardens Police Department, City of North Miami Police Department, DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration), FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation), Bal Harbour Police Department, Broward County Public Defender’s Office, City of Doral Police Department, City of Miami Springs Police Department, City of Opa-Locka Police Department, Department of Juvenile Justice, Florida International University Police Department, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission from South Region B, Medley Police Department, Miami Beach Police Department, Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, Miami-Dade Public Defender’s Office, Miami Shores Police Department, Miccosukee Indian Police Department, North Miami Beach Police Department, Sunny Isles Beach Police Department, Surfside Police Department, United States Postal Inspection Service and the Village of Pinecrest Police Department.

“It was an amazing to host this event with the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. I know it’s important to our Owner Stephen Ross, our President & CEO Tom Garfinkel and our players to drive the social justice conversation forward,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications & Community Affairs Jason Jenkins said. “Our hope is that this program can serve as a model across the NFL and professional sports by bringing together youth and law enforcement to reduce tensions and find common ground. We will continue to use our platform to drive social progress in our community.”

Jenkins was joined by several current and former members of the Miami Dolphins, including Jake Brendel, Jermon Bushrod, Troy Drayton, Ja’Wuan James, O.J. McDuffie, Nat Moore, Twan Russell and Kenny Stills. The sponsorship of the conference is part of a yearly fund for advocacy and social justice programs created by Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross and Miami Dolphins players.

Dolphins Cancer Challenge VIII Celebrates Cancer Survivors and Raises Funds for Cancer Research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center

Miami, FL – The Miami Dolphins celebrated the resilience of cancer survivors and capped another successful Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) today. The event is the NFL’s single largest fundraiser. The eighth edition of this annual community endeavor raises funds for innovative cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The DCC donates 100 percent of participant-raised funds to Sylvester. The event boasted more than 4,000 cancer fighters who biked, ran, walked and volunteered throughout all of South Florida with a goal to tackle cancer. The event culminated with a Concert Celebration at Hard Rock Stadium with Big Head Todd and The Monsters, with headliners the Goo Goo Dolls.

“This year our anthem is to celebrate the resiliency and vitality of cancer survivors. We’re proud to have more than 250 survivors among our largest turnout of participants in our eight-year history. We want to personally thank The Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Foundation for putting a spotlight on these cancer fighters,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President & Dolphins Cancer Challenge Executive Director Jennifer Jehn said. “Each and every dollar raised makes a difference, going directly to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for innovative research and targeted therapies. Today was amazing to see the South Florida community come together to tackle cancer.”

The Survivor Program presented by the Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Foundation will continue to share the stories of #CancerFighters, those on the front line who galvanize efforts at the DCC. Survivors within the program received a Living Proof arm sleeve and distinguished-shirt, and are able to partake in a number of events year round, including the Dolphins Crucial Catch campaign, photo series and Survivor Breakfast.

“Our gratitude goes out to everyone involved in the DCC, from the Dolphins to the donors, volunteers and each and every participant,” Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Director Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., said. “We are all partners in this fight to find new cures. The impact of this event and everyone’s commitment cannot be overstated.”

DCC VIII weekend commenced with the Kickoff Party on Friday, Feb. 9, followed by the DCC signature event on Saturday Feb. 10 that included five bike routes through South Florida, a run/walk 5K and a finish line celebration concert by the Goo Goo Dolls with Big Head Todd and The Monsters. The DCC continues to solidify its position as the largest event fundraiser in the NFL.

The Dolphins Cancer Challenge donates 100 percent of the participant-raised funds to innovative cancer research at Sylvester. Funds are still being collected through March 31, 2018.

The Dolphins Cancer Challenge will continue raising funds for cancer research with its third annual DCC Celebrity Golf Tournament on April 13, 2018. The tournament is another chance for cancer fighters to golf and interact with athletes and other celebrity guests. One hundred percent of the funds raised from the golf tournament will benefit Sylvester.
