Miami Dolphins sign 5-time Pro Bowl running back Gore

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed five-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore.

Gore is entering his 14th NFL season and is one of the most accomplished running backs in league history. His 3,226 carries and 14,026 yards rank fifth in NFL history. The four rushers ahead of him – Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders and Curtis Martin – are all in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Gore is just 75 yards shy of Martin for fourth all-time.

Gore is one of only five running backs in NFL history to record nine-or-more seasons with at least 1,000 rushing yards, doing so most recently in 2016. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl five times – following the 2006, 2009 and 2011-13 seasons – and was a second-team All-Pro honoree in 2016. Gore has shown remarkable durability, playing in 112 consecutive games (dating back to the start of the 2011 season) and currently has a streak of 108 consecutive starts. Both are the most by an active NFL running back.

Gore spent 10 seasons with San Francisco (2005-14) and three with Indianapolis (2015-17). He is the 49ers’ all-time leading rusher with 11,073 yards and was part of the team that won the NFC Championship in 2012 and played in Super Bowl XLVII. He originally entered the NFL as a third-round pick (65th overall) by San Francisco in the 2005 NFL draft.

A South Florida native, Gore attended the University of Miami where he was a member of the Hurricanes’ 2001 national championship team. He played high school football at Coral Gables High School where he broke the Miami-Dade County single-season rushing records with 2,997 yards and 39 touchdowns as a senior in 2000.

Quotes

Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross

“Any organization works best when the people know that the head of the organization cares about them. I thought it was incumbent on me and a responsibility that I had to show them the opportunities they can have when they finish their careers. The feedback from this program has been terrific. What we want to do is help them find something that they have the same passion for as they do when they are playing football. These are smart young guys that really want to succeed. I think every team should do this and it is a very important initiative that all owners should follow. ”

Reshad Jones

“I always want to learn, so I came up here to get as much knowledge as I can and hear from powerful people and bond with my brothers, my teammates. I learned to be an entrepreneur, you have to sometime take risks and also be authentic. I think (Stephen Ross) is one of the best owners in this business. It shows a lot about his character. It shows he really cares about his guys and the team. It’s more than football to him.”

Sam Young

“I just think this was a great opportunity to take advantage of the ability and relationships to put yourselves in a different environment and be able to grow. We talk about coaches all of the time and having a coach or mentor in the locker room. Well, it’s about having a mentor off the field too. Everyone has to transition away from the game eventually and have a coach off the field to help you make the best of it. This is extremely unique. Stephen has been great in allowing us to come here and open up his companies. It takes us out of our comfort zone and shows how much he cares about us not only as players, but as people.”

Wilson played the first four seasons (2014-17) of his NFL career with Kansas City, where he saw action in 55 games with 26 starts and recorded 124 receptions for 1,544 yards (12.5 avg.) and seven touchdowns. He was a high school quarterback at Port St. Lucie (Fla.) High School.

Aikens has played in 62 career games with four starts during his four-year NFL career (2014-17), all with the Dolphins. Denney has played in every game for the Dolphins since 2005, a span of 208 straight games, which is the longest streak in team history and tied for the third-longest streak among active NFL players. Denney has been selected to two Pro Bowls, following the 2010 and 2012 seasons. He originally joined the Dolphins as an undrafted college free agent on April 29, 2005.
