MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ program, under the organization’s “Teamwork At Work” initiative, took part in the Special Olympics’ Law Enforcement Torch Run on Friday, April 26, 2019.

“We were proud to host our FOOTBALL UNITES™ community partners at Hard Rock Stadium. Special Olympics South Florida, Miami Gardens Police Department and North Miami Police Department are igniting a spirit of altruism and today was a terrific example of that flame being shared in our community,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications & Community Affairs Jason Jenkins.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run was a collaborative effort among FOOTBALL UNITES™ community partners including Special Olympics South Florida, Miami Gardens Police Department (MGPD) and North Miami Police Department (NMPD). Participants ran from the MGPD station to Hard Rock Stadium and then passed the Special Olympics Torch to NMPD.

“It is always a proud moment for us to partner with the Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ program and the Miami Gardens Police Department on initiatives, like the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run.  As Guardians of the Light, it is an honor to team-up as we light the way for acceptance and inclusion,” North Miami Police Department Chief of Police Larry Juriga said.

“We are very excited to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of Special Olympics. It just goes to show that we have one vision, one mindset,” Miami Gardens Police Department Chief of Police Delma K. Noel-Pratt added.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins and Baptist Health South Florida yesterday surprised the Felix Varela Senior High School football and girls flag football team with equipment to help create a safer and healthier environment for their programs. The donated equipment included Junior Dolphins and Baptist Health branded shirts, an end zone camera, medicine balls, a cooling fan, cleats, shoulder pads, backpacks, footballs and Gatorade product.

“When the truck opened and we saw all of this equipment come out, the emotions from the players, that’s an overwhelming experience and we’ll certainly take this opportunity and capitalize off of it,” said Felix Varela Senior High School Head Football Coach Patrick Ledan.

“I believe the end zone camera, that was a big improvement to our equipment here,” said sophomore quarterback Dominic Medina. “That way we can see the field better and we can get a higher elevation viewpoint. It will help us out a lot.”

The team also had the opportunity to hear from Dolphins alum and Youth Programs Ambassador Twan Russell about the commitment and dedication required from an athlete to succeed. Dolphins defensive tackle Joey Mbu and Peter Smith, Director of Rehabilitation Services at Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute, also were on hand for the donation.

Still, we defied the odds,” said Pahokee High School Head Football Coach Demir Boldin. “I think this donation will even out the playing field for our kids to better prepare them for college, to better prepare them for the game of football safely and it’s something that I’m very, very excited about.”

Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ Announce Partnership with Miami-Dade Schools Police Department

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ program, under the organization’s “Teamwork At Work” initiative, announced its partnership with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department on a series of initiatives designed to promote positive interaction between youth and law enforcement on Friday, April 19, 2019.

“We are excited to expand our partnership with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department through our FOOTBALL UNITES™ initiative,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications & Community Affairs Jason Jenkins said. “The Police Explorers is an amazing program that inspires youth and bridges the gap between law enforcement and the community. We are deeply committed to helping these young men and women level the playing field so they are successful in life and appreciate the platform we have to help them on their path to greatness.”

Miami Dolphins player Charles Harris attended the event to welcome the 80 students of the Miami Dade Police Explorers from Miami-Dade County Public High Schools including Barbara Goleman, Felix Varela, Hialeah Gardens, Homestead, Law Enforcement Memorial, Mays School of the Arts, Miami Central and Southridge, as they arrived to Hialeah Gardens High School to kick off the partnership. Harris and Miami Dade Schools Police officers participated in a series interactive drills and stations followed by a character talk with Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Ambassador Twan Russell.

“It is an exciting time to reinvigorate the partnership between the Miami Dolphins and the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department,” Miami Dade Schools Chief of Police Edwin Lopez said. “Our agency is tasked with protecting the community’s most valuable asset: our kids in schools. The recalibrated partnership and incorporation of our Police Explorer Program will afford students with the opportunity to experience another leadership vantage point aligned with sports, teamwork, community and health. We are ecstatic.”

Through this partnership, the Dolphins will fund a scholarship for those interested in serving the community as a Dade Schools police officer. Chief Lopez announced Miami Central Senior High School Senior Emily Santana as the 2019 recipient for this scholarship at this event. Additionally, participants in the Police Explorers Program will be fully integrated into FOOTBALL UNITES™ programming, including The Captains Program, cultural tours and CommUNITY Tailgates. Furthermore, the Dolphins will provide uniform shirts to Police Explorers.

“Having the Miami Dolphins give me this scholarship was shocking and amazing it’s like I am part of their team now it feels like I’m home,” Miami Central Senior High School Student Emily Santana said. “When they had told me I had received a full scholarship to the academy it’s a blessing. Coming from a family of a single mother, I could tell that this will cover so much already and pursing my dreams, I have a passion for law enforcement it runs in the family. My uncle is a police officer as well as my older sister so I am just trying to get the next step of becoming a police officer, getting my Bachelor’s in criminal justice as well as getting into the police academy.”

The Police Explorers Program is a volunteer program sponsored by MDSPD and governed by the rules of the Learning for Life Organization. The program is designed to provide high-school age youth ages 14 to 18 with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA the opportunity to learn about a career in law enforcement. For more information on the Police Explorers Program, visit here.

As part of the Dolphins’ “Teamwork at Work” platform to level the playing field through the power of teamwork to inspire a healthier, more educated and united South Florida community, Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross and Dolphins players created the FOOTBALL UNITES™ program as a way to bring positive social change. These programs connect to the NFL’s Inspire Change platform, showcasing the collaborative efforts of players, owners and the league to create positive change in communities across the country and work with RISE – the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality — to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice and improve race relations.

* Game subject to flexible scheduling in Weeks 11-17
All times EASTERN

“Flexible scheduling” will again be used in Weeks 11-17.  In Weeks 11-16, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time. A flexible scheduling move would be announced at least 12 days before the game.

For Week 17, the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to December 29. The schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot.  Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into primetime.

Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday or Monday nights.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today hosted more than 800 local youth and high school coaches at their fourth annual Coaches Clinic presented by Nike and supported by Ephesus Sports Lighting and Gatorade at Hard Rock Stadium. Coaches from Charleston Southern University, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Miami and St. Thomas University taught 33 different classroom and on-field sessions focused on game and practice techniques, motivational tools and core football competencies. Miami Dolphins Head Coach Brian Flores welcomed the participants prior to the breakout sessions. Participants received a Nike gift bag and high school coaches received Gatorade product for their team.

“I really believe that this, right now, is a celebration of our game, a game that’s very important to me, that’s done a lot for me in my life. I talk about this as much as I can: football, growing up as a poor kid in Brooklyn, New York, I would say football is the only thing that leveled the playing field for me, me and my family, and it’s done that in a big way,” said Flores. “To be in a room filled with coaches who want to make an impact, who want to help develop young people, of course I’m going to come do this, of course I’m going to come speak. What I want to do is give you guys a round of applause for doing the things that you do.”

“This event was a great opportunity for coaches at all levels to grow as teachers and have a positive impact on their teams,” said Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Director RaShauna Hamilton. “We are committed to making the game healthier and safer for South Florida student-athletes, coaches and parents. It is great to have the support, time and resources of our senior leadership in Stephen Ross, Tom Garfinkel, Chris Grier and Brian Flores with important events like this that help advance our mission.”

Also on hand to present about concussion education was Gillian Hotz, Ph.D., Director of the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute’s concussion program. In 2017, the Miami Dolphins Foundation partnered with the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute and KiDZ Neuroscience Center at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis to sponsor The University of Miami Countywide Concussion Care High School Program, which performs baseline concussion testing for all high school athletes at Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Additionally, Tod Creneti from the Positive Coaching Alliance offered presentations on how to be a more effective coach and encourage young athletes, USA Football provided Heads Up Football certification to youth coaches and the Florida High School Athletics Association presented on compliance.

The Junior Dolphins program encourages youth players and coaches to learn, teach and play football in a fun and safe environment. The Junior Dolphins program is designed to give kids access to learn the fundamentals of football using the NFL’s top resources. To grow the game, the Junior Dolphins program will work to educate coaches, parents and youth on the health and safety of football with a strong emphasis on character development. Junior Dolphins is building the next generation of Dolphins Fans.
