Miami Dolphins, AARP Foundation Host Fifth Annual Million Meal Pack

Davie, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins and AARP Foundation teamed up for the 5th Annual Million Meal Pack at the Rick Case Arena at Nova Southeastern University. Participants packed 1,017,504 meals that will be delivered by U.S. Hunger to older adults in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. On hand to help pack meals were AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh Ryerson, Miami Dolphins Vice Chair, President & CEO Tom Garfinkel, Executive Vice President of Football Operations Mike Tannenbaum, Head Coach Adam Gase, coaches, staff and both current and former players, including Larry Ball, Jake Brendal, Donald Brown, Bob Brudzinski, Jesse Davis, John Denney, Troy Drayton, Roy Foster, Trent Gamble, Oronde Gadsden, Sean Hill, Xavien Howard, Ja’Wuan James, Jim Jensen, Daniel Kilgore, Sam Madison, OJ McDuffie, Raekwon McMillan, Cameron Malveaux, Ed Perry, Ken Poole, Steve Potter, Twan Russell, Bryant Salter, Rashawn Scott, Eric Smith, Maurice Smith, Pat Surtain, Laremy Tunsil, Jed Weaver, Shawn Wooden, Sam Young.

“The Miami Dolphins are dedicated to be being off field champions in the community, but today the community is the true champion,” Miami Dolphins Foundation Executive Director Jennifer Jehn said. “Today we packed one million meals that will stay right here in South Florida, and through our thriving partnership with AARP Foundation – more than five million nutritious meals over five years have supported those in need. This is a testament to our players, alumni, coaches, fans and South Florida – coming together for a unified mission to end hunger.”

“The importance of this event can’t be overstated,” AARP Foundation President Lisa Marsh Ryerson said. “More than 700,000 seniors in Florida struggle to get enough nutritious food on a daily basis. Working with the Miami Dolphins, and with the help of outstanding local volunteers, we can help vulnerable older adults in South Florida meet this most basic, essential need.”

At the Million Meal Pack, more than 4,906 enthusiastic volunteers worked an assembly line to pack nutritious Jambalaya meals of red lentils, rice, dehydrated vegetables and pink Himalayan salt. Volunteers also were invited to take part in a Community Fair as a thank you for their service. The fair’s lively atmosphere featured live music, football activities, performances by the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders and chances to win prizes. Participants were also able to learn about additional volunteer opportunities to serve their senior neighbors though interactive demonstrations, speakers and take-home materials.

Together, AARP Foundation and the Miami Dolphins have built a volunteer community committed to serving low-income older adults in South Florida. As the presenting sponsor of the Miami Dolphins Special Teams program – the largest volunteer program in the National Football League – AARP Foundation has helped execute numerous service events in South Florida and has positively impacted the region in an effort to help older adults facing challenges with hunger, isolation, income and housing needs through targeted and customized events to address these issues.

Miami Dolphins announce 2018 schedule

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins today announced their 2018 schedule. The team will kick off the 2018 season at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. against Tennessee. It is just the second time since 2011 the Dolphins have opened the season at home and first since 2014 after the Dolphins’ season-opener vs. Tampa Bay last season was moved to Week 11 due to Hurricane Irma.

For the first time since 2013, the Dolphins will not play a road game outside of the Eastern or Central time zones. Miami will play five road contests in the Eastern time zone – the N.Y. Jets, New England, Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Baltimore – and three games in the Central time zone – Houston, Green Bay and Minnesota.

Miami’s home schedule features an impressive slate of opponents, including four games against playoff teams from the 2017 season. The Dolphins will host Tennessee (Sept. 9), Oakland (Sept. 23), Chicago (Oct. 14), Detroit (Oct. 21), the N.Y. Jets (Nov. 4), Buffalo (Dec. 2), New England (Dec. 9) and Jacksonville (Dec. 22 or Dec. 23). Tennessee, Buffalo, New England and Jacksonville all made the playoffs last season, with Jacksonville and New England winning their respective divisions and playing in the AFC Championship game.

The Dolphins will play seven total games against playoff teams from a season ago and four games against the teams that participated in last year’s conference championship games. In addition to their premier home matchups, the team will also play road games against New England (Sept. 3), Minnesota (Dec. 16) and Buffalo (Dec. 30). Minnesota won the NFC North in 2017 and played in the NFC Championship game.

Miami will make an appearance on the nationally-televised Thursday Night Football package on Oct. 25 at Houston. This season’s Thursday Night Football games will air live on FOX and NFL Network and kick off slightly earlier at 8:20 p.m. Eastern. It is the second consecutive season the team has its bye week scheduled for Week 11 (Nov. 18), which is the latest bye week the Dolphins have ever had. Last year’s bye week was rescheduled to Week 1 due to Hurricane Irma.

The Dolphins will also visit the N.Y. Jets (Sept. 16), Cincinnati (Oct. 7), Green Bay (Nov. 11) and Indianapolis (Nov. 25). The team’s trip to Lambeau Field on Nov. 11 is the latest the Dolphins have traveled to Green Bay since posting a 34-24 win on Dec. 8, 1985.

The Dolphins also announced dates and times for their four preseason games. The first game vs. Tampa Bay will be played on Thursday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m. In Week 2, the Dolphins will travel to Carolina on Friday, Aug. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The team will host Baltimore in Week 3 on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. before wrapping up the preseason at Atlanta in Week 4 on Thursday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.

All games can be heard on Miami’s Sports Radio 560 WQAM, the official flagship radio partner of the franchise, and simulcast on KISS 99.9 FM. Fans can also listen to the Dolphins in Spanish on Univision Deportes Radio WQBA 1140 AM. The four preseason games can be seen locally in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale market on WFOR-TV CBS4, the official home of the Miami Dolphins in South Florida.

* Game subject to flexible scheduling in Weeks 5-17
All times EASTERN

“Flexible scheduling” will be used in Weeks 11-17. Additionally, in Weeks 5-10, flexible scheduling may be used in no more than two weeks. In Weeks 5-16, the schedule lists the games tentatively set for Sunday Night Football on NBC. Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game would be moved to an afternoon start time. A flexible scheduling move would be announced at least 12 days before the game.

Flexibility for Saturday games in Weeks 15 and 16 is also part of the 2018 schedule. In Week 15, there will be two games played on Saturday on NFL Network, with the game times of 4:30 PM ET and 8:20 PM ET to be determined. In Week 16, two of four possible match ups will be scheduled for Saturday. Start times and Saturday games for Week 15 and 16 will be announced no later than following Week 8, with the non-Saturday games to be played on Sunday.

For Week 17, the Sunday night game will be announced no later than six days prior to December 30. The schedule does not list a Sunday night game in Week 17, but an afternoon game with playoff implications will be moved to that time slot.  Flexible scheduling ensures quality matchups in all Sunday time slots in those weeks and gives “surprise” teams a chance to play their way into primetime.

Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday or Monday nights.

Miami Dolphins re-sign 6 former players

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins today announced they re-signed tackle Vernon Carey, wide receiver Chris Chambers, defensive end Jeff Cross, linebacker/defensive end A.J. Duhe, punter Brandon Fields and defensive tackle Paul Soliai. Each player signed a one-day contract and will officially retire as members of the Miami Dolphins.

These six former players were added to the active roster to further emphasize the bond between the organization and the team’s alumni, who helped established the rich legacy of the Miami Dolphins. The players combined to play 46 seasons for the Dolphins, totaling 681 games played and five Pro Bowl selections.

Carey played his entire high school, college and NFL careers in Miami. After playing high school football at Miami Northwestern High School, Carey moved on to the University of Miami where he helped the Hurricanes win the 2001 national championship. The Dolphins drafted him with their first-round pick (19th overall) in the 2004 NFL draft and Carey went on to play eight seasons (2004-11) for his hometown team. He totaled 121 games played and 107 starts, earning starting assignments at left tackle, right tackle and right guard. Carey was named as a co-winner of the team’s Nat Moore Community Service Award in 2007.

Chambers was selected by Miami in the second-round (52nd overall) in the 2001 NFL draft. He immediately became a presence in the Dolphins offense, leading the team in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns as a rookie. Chambers played seven seasons (2001-07) for the Dolphins and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2005. He finished his NFL career with 540 receptions for 7,648 yards (14.2 avg.) and 58 touchdowns.

Cross joined the Dolphins as a ninth-round pick (239th overall) in the 1988 NFL draft. He played eight seasons (1988-95) in the NFL, all with the Dolphins. Cross totaled 125 games played with 107 starts and ranks sixth in team history with 59.5 sacks. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1990 when he recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks. In his eight seasons, Cross helped the team to four playoff berths. He was enshrined on the Dolphins Walk of Fame in 2014.

Duhe was Miami’s first-round pick (13th overall) in the 1977 NFL draft and made an immediate impact, winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. He played eight NFL seasons (1977-84) at both linebacker and defensive end for the Dolphins and was a member of the “Killer B’s” defense that helped the team reach two Super Bowls in the 1980s. In the 1982 AFC Championship game, Duhe intercepted New York Jets quarterback Richard Todd three times, including one for a touchdown, to help Miami win the game 14-0. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1984 and recorded 38.5 career sacks. Duhe was enshrined on the Dolphins Walk of Fame in 2012.

Fields was a seventh-round pick (225th overall) by Miami in the 2007 NFL draft. He played nine NFL seasons, the first eight (2007-14) of which came in Miami. Fields totaled 128 games played for the Dolphins and earned a Pro Bowl selection following the 2013 season. He holds team records for highest punting average in a career, a single season and a game. His career average of 46.7 yards per punt is the fifth-highest in NFL history. Fields either won or co-won the Nat Moore Community Service Award each year from 2011-13.

Soliai joined the Dolphins as a fourth-round pick (108th overall) in the 2007 NFL draft. He played seven (2007-13) of his 10 NFL seasons in Miami and appeared in 99 games with 62 starts for the Dolphins. Soliai earned a Pro Bowl selection following the 2011 season and finished his Dolphins career with 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He was named the team’s recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award in 2013.
