Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ Collaborates with Broward’s Sherriff’s Office for Community Building Ride Along
DANIA BEACH, FL– The Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ program collaborated with Broward’s Sherriff’s Office (BSO) for a community building ride along to demonstrate a unified front between Dolphins players and law enforcement on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Miami Dolphins Shaq Calhoun, Bobby McCain, Doug Middleton, Durval Queiroz Neto and Chidi Okeke joined BSO to participate in a series of exercises and activities to engage with the community, discuss community policing and emphasize importance of perspective taking.
“Just being able to get out so they can see the Dolphins players and the police join forces and see that we are one community and we stand together is big,” Miami Dolphins Cornerback Bobby McCain said. “We are all here for a reason and we are all here to help at the end of the day.”
As part of the ride along, Miami Dolphins players were paired with law enforcement officers to visit local communities in Broward County making stops at the Boys and Girls Club, Mary Saunders Park and C.W. Thomas Park in Dania Beach. To conclude the ride along, the group attended a roll call with BSO deputies at Dania Beach District.
“I applaud the Miami Dolphins players and management for their efforts and enthusiasm to help bring awareness to community policing and public safety,” Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony said. “The Broward Sheriff’s Office looks forward to continuing with this partnership to help build relationships with our communities.”
The FOOTBALL UNITES™ Law Enforcement program consists of Miami Dolphins players, alumni, cheerleaders and staff working with local law enforcement to jointly engage youth, discuss community policing and promote positive interactions. Anchor events include a Police and Youth Conference with the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project and ride alongs. This marks the team’s fifth law enforcement ride along and is the fourth ride along with BSO.
These efforts and initiatives align with the organization’s goal to level the playing field through the power of teamwork to inspire a healthier, more educated and united South Florida community. Dolphins Chairman of the Board & Managing General Partner Stephen Ross and Dolphins players created the FOOTBALL UNITES™ program as a way to bring positive social change. The Miami Dolphins organization believes it is important to be inclusive of the diversity and aware of the intersections that make up South Florida, uniting groups of different races, genders, sexual orientations, identities, abilities and faiths around the power of football.
These programs connect to the NFL’s Inspire Change platform, showcasing the collaborative efforts of players, owners and the league to create positive change in communities across the country and work with RISE – the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality – to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice and improve race relations. Miami Dolphins make roster moves
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed cornerback Marcus Sherels and running back De’Lance Turner. The Dolphins also waived defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche and placed wide receiver Preston Williams on injured reserve.
Sherels has played in 123 NFL games with six starts for the Minnesota Vikings since he was signed as an undrafted college free agent on May 5, 2010. Sherels has recorded 72 total tackles (59 solo), one sack, one interception, 11 passes defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries in his career. He also has extensive special teams experience, totaling 237 punt returns for 2,480 yards (10.5 avg.) and five touchdowns, 54 kickoff returns for 1,359 yards (25.2 avg.) and 37 special teams tackles (35 solo). Sherels has also played in four playoff games.
Turner was signed off Baltimore’s practice squad. He played in four games for the Ravens as a rookie last year before being placed on injured reserve on Oct. 13, 2018. He had one carry for four yards and posted two special teams tackles (one solo). Turner originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with Baltimore on May 4, 2018. He played collegiately at Alcorn State, where he was second in the FCS in rushing (1,357 yards) as a senior in 2017.
Nkemdiche played in two games for Miami after he was activated off the physically unable to perform list on Oct. 28, 2019. He joined the Dolphins on Aug. 8, 2019 as a free agent after playing three seasons (2016-18) in Arizona. Nkemdiche originally entered the NFL as a first-round pick (29th overall) by Arizona in the 2016 NFL draft.
Williams ends his season with 32 receptions, tied for the most by any rookie in the NFL this season. His 428 receiving yards are fourth and his three receiving touchdowns are tied for fourth among rookie wide receivers. Williams joined the Dolphins as an undrafted college free agent on May 9, 2019.

Miami Dolphins Announce Week 9 Play Football Award Winners
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins announced their Play Football Week 9 award winners in a program designed to celebrate youth football in South Florida. For each home game, the Dolphins will identify a high school coach of the week, high school player of the week, youth player of the week and team mom of the week. The high school coach of the week selection will celebrate those with long-standing tenure in the coaching community, paying tribute to Don Shula’s 50th season with the Miami Dolphins organization.
Award recipients will receive tickets to a Dolphins home game, be presented with a plaque on the field at Hard Rock Stadium and receive acknowledgement of their accomplishment in the game program and through the Dolphins’ social media platforms. The Dolphins also will recognize a team of the week who will be on field during the national anthem.
The program concludes at the Dolphins-Eagles game where the Dolphins will honor yearly award winners in all categories with the exception of the team of the year.
Week 9 Winners:
- High School Coach of the Week: Greg Magner from Hialeah Gardens High School. Magner’s coaching career began 35 years ago at John Carroll University as a quality control coach and defensive backs coach. He first became a head coach at Ransom Everglades School after serving as an assistant coach. Magner’s success at Ransom lead him to Archbishop Curley Notre Dame. For the next 26 years, Magner coached multiple sports, including 26 years as a head football coach, 20 years as a head track and field coach and 15 years as a boys and girls basketball coach. In 2002, he led his football team to a 10-0 regular season record and they finished the year 12-1.
- High School Player of the Week: Derek Wingo from St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The four-star outside linebacker had four sacks, eight tackles and a pass break up in a 28-7 win over Deerfield Beach. Wingo is currently verbally committed to the University of Florida.
- Youth Player of the Week: Gaby Almonard Jr. from the Pompano Eagles 12U of the American Youth Football League. Almonard Jr. had four carries for 60 yards and one touchdown on offense and six tackles and two fumble recoveries and one touchdown on defense in a 36-6 win over the Lauderhill Broncos.
- Team Mom of the Week: Gabrielle Wilson of the Kendall Hammock Warriors of the Miami Xtreme League. While Wilson has never been the head team mom or an official team mom every season in her league, she is always there for the players by encouraging them, giving advice and providing food and equipment. She is well-known for caring for all the players in the league and is even recognized for her commitment by other park commissioners.
- Team of the Week: Hialeah Gardens High School and Somerset Academy Silver Palms.
The Junior Dolphins program encourages youth players and coaches to teach, learn and play football in a fun and safe environment. The Junior Dolphins program is designed to give kids access to learn the fundamentals of football using the NFL’s top resources. To grow the game, the Junior Dolphins program will work to educate coaches, parents and youth on the health and safety of football with a strong emphasis on character development. Junior Dolphins is building the next generation of Dolphins Fans.

Dolphins Cancer Challenge Hosts Heavy Hitters Celebration presented by Berkowitz Pollack Brand and Provenance Wealth Advisors
Miami Gardens, FL – The Miami Dolphins on Wednesday, Oct. 30 hosted the Heavy Hitters Celebration presented by Berkowitz Pollack Brand and Provenance Wealth Advisors. The Dolphins Cancer Challenge Heavy Hitters comprised of a group of 288, whose fundraising efforts for the 2019 event raised $3,039,641. Their donations accounted for almost 50 percent of the DCC’s total $5.2M gift to University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Participants are considered Heavy Hitters who have raised $2,750 or more for innovative cancer research. The evening entailed a fun twist on the event with more activities and fun built in to celebrate and honor the heavy hitters. All Pros (fundraisers of $10,000 or more) and Top Tacklers (fundraisers of $5,000 or more) had the exclusive perk of catching a pass on the field from Pro Football Hall of Famers Dan Marino or Jason Taylor.
Below are the award winners:
- Champions Award: Mike Estevez (Palmetto Bay, FL). The Champions Award is given to a participant who embodies the spirit of why the DCC was created nearly 10 years ago and supports the DCC through a multitude of different avenues. Mike Estevez participated in his fifth DCC this year and consistently raised more than $3,000 during each campaign. Estevez also participates as part of the Ride Marshal team and is committed to keeping participants safe not only during DCC weekend but throughout the year at multiple DCC Training Rides.
- Rookie Heavy Hitter of the Year: Michael Walsh (Miami, FL). This award is provided to the DCC participant who raises more money than any other first-year participant. Walsh for the event in February rode 100 miles and raised $21,000 in his first year participating in the DCC.
- Mad Dog Mandich Courage Award: Dominick Froio Jr. (Doral, FL). The Jim “Mad Dog” Mandich Courage Award goes to the Heavy Hitter who inspires, motivates and challenges those around them to strive to be better. This winner knows no limits, consistently beating expectations and does not know the definition of boundaries. Jessica MacIntyre is an unsung hero of the DCC. Froio is a proud cancer survivor from Sylvester who has raised more than $40,000 over four years for the DCC and works tirelessly as the team captain for Team Carnival.
- Team of the Year Award: Team Mack Cycle (Miami, FL). Team Mack Cycle increased both its participation to 102 and fundraising by more than 50 percent this year totaling their DCC IX contribution to $150,000.
- Team Hurricanes Above and Beyond Award: Robert Merlin (Coconut Grove, FL). This award is given to a member of Team Hurricanes whose efforts embody what Team Hurricanes stands for and the mission of the DCC. Merlin demonstrated a high level of commitment, determination and persistence to maximize his efforts to go above and beyond, most recently riding 100 miles for DCC IX. He has raised $120,000 over the years, attaining Heavy Hitter status over the last three years.
DCC 10 is scheduled to take place Feb. 29, 2020 and will include five bike routes throughout South Florida, a run/walk 5K and a Finish Line Festival presented by Moss Construction. For more information, visit DolphinsCancerChallenge.com.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have been awarded cornerback Ken Crawley off waivers from New Orleans and waived wide receiver Isaiah Ford.
Crawley has spent the past four seasons (2016-19) with New Orleans, playing in 39 games and making 23 starts. He has 128 career tackles (115 solo), one interception, 31 passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He’s also played in three playoff games with two starts. Crawley originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with New Orleans on May 9, 2016.
Ford has played in four games over the past two seasons (2018-19) for Miami, totaling two receptions for 9 yards (4.5 avg.). He began the 2019 season on the Dolphins practice squad before he was promoted to the active roster on Sept. 25. Ford originally entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick (237th overall) by the Dolphins in the 2017 NFL draft.

Miami Dolphins sign Walford
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed tight end Clive Walford and placed cornerback Xavien Howard on injured reserve.
Walford spent the offseason and training camp with Miami before he was released on Aug. 27, 2019. He has played in 45 NFL games with 11 starts after three seasons in Oakland (2015-17) and one with the N.Y. Jets (2018). In his career, Walford has caught 70 passes for 768 yards (11.0 avg.) and six touchdowns. A South Florida native, he attended Glades Central High School before playing at the University of Miami.
Howard started five games for the Dolphins this season, totaling 17 tackles (12 solo), one interception and four passes defensed. In four seasons with the team, Howard has played in 40 games with 39 starts. He tied for the NFL lead with seven interceptions last year and his 12 interceptions since December 2017 are tied for the most in the NFL in that span. Howard originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick (38th overall) by the Dolphins in the 2016 NFL draft.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have been awarded cornerback Xavier Crawford off waivers from Houston and released tight end Nick O’Leary.
Crawford has played in four NFL games with the Texans, totaling two special teams tackles (one solo). He entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick (195th overall) by Houston in the 2019 NFL draft. Crawford was a first-team All-Mid-American Conference selection as a senior at Central Michigan in 2018. He transferred from Oregon State following the 2017 season and was a Freshman All-American for the Beavers in 2016.
O’Leary played in 19 games with nine starts over the past two seasons (2018-19) with Miami. He originally joined the Dolphins on the practice squad on Sept. 20, 2018 before being promoted to the active roster on Oct. 6, 2018. He caught 12 passes for 123 yards (10.3 avg.) and one touchdown during his Dolphins tenure. O’Leary originally entered the NFL as a sixth-round pick (194th overall) by Buffalo in the 2015 NFL draft and has played in 54 NFL games in his career.

Miami Dolphins make trade with Rams
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have acquired cornerback Aqib Talib and an undisclosed draft pick from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for an undisclosed draft pick. The Rams placed Talib on injured reserve on Oct. 16, 2019.
Talib is a five-time Pro Bowl cornerback (2013-17) and earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2016. He has played in 148 career games with 134 starts, totaling 459 tackles (382 solo), one sack, 35 interceptions, 125 passes defensed, five forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. Talib has played for Tampa Bay (2008-12), New England (2012-13), Denver (2014-17) and the Rams (2018-19) in his 12-year career. He originally entered the NFL as a first-round pick (20th overall) by Tampa Bay in the 2008 NFL draft.
