Miami Dolphins and Publix Partner To Host Dolphins Kids Cook-Off

Plantation, FL – The Miami Dolphins hosted the Dolphins Kids Cook-Off presented by Publix in which Miami Dolphins players Cornell Armstrong, Jerome Baker, Jalen Davis Luke Falk, Minkah Fitzpatrick, Connor Hilland, Jamiyus Pittman, Quentin Poling, Durham Smythe and Kenny Stills, along with T.D., Dolphins staff, police officers and 19 students teamed up to show off their cooking skills at the Publix Aprons Cooking School on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

“One of the things that is so great about being true partners with the Dolphins is getting to see the players totally involved, it means the world to the kids, they light up and everyone has a good time,” said Publix Media & Community Relations Manager Nicole Krauss. “We have a long-standing partnership with the Dolphins and we work on a variety of community oriented events throughout the year and this special one we have is just before thanksgiving so we thought food, fun, family, bringing everyone together in the kitchen, what better way to bring in the holidays.”

The group gathered at the Publix Aprons Cooking School to take photos and received aprons as they were divided into two groups to receive an up close and personal cooking lesson. Following the instructions of the Chef Ray and his team, the students and players got their hands dirty as they worked together to prepare and then enjoy pizza, Caesar salad and cupcakes all made from scratch.  Additionally, each student received a $100 Publix gift card to help with groceries for the upcoming holiday seasons.

“We are with Football Unites kids and also with police officers basically learning to cook for the holidays just having a great time baking cupcakes and cooking pizza which is my favorite,” said Miami Dolphins Linebacker Jerome Baker. “It’s definitely a blessing of how well the Dolphins support us and also support the kids. It is amazing honestly every week it is always something new and it’s another event to really connect with the kids and the community. Just have a good time with them. They come out every Sunday to support us so it’s one way to give back. They are starting to know us more, be comfortable with us so it’s definitely fun to see those smiles on their faces and how surprising how easy it is to make something so simple as a pizza.”

Students from the Miami Dolphin’s Football Unites programs of Miramar PAL, North Miami PAL, North Miami Beach PAL, BSO PAL and Miami Gardens Explorers were selected to participate in this event. Police Officers from each of the corresponding areas also attended to show their support and interact with the youth and players.

“I learned a lot more stuff then from what I knew before so it was beneficial,” said North Miami Beach Police Athletic League Student Stephanie Pineda. “We are learning how to cook but we are also talking with the Dolphins players and with other kids so it’s like we are learning from different people.”

“There aren’t words that could express how grateful we are for the Dolphins to put a Football Unites collaboration with different organizations not only for the children but for the adults to come in contact with each other and learn about each other and get an opportunity that probably would never happen to be fulfilled with the Dolphins players,” added Executive Director of the Police Athletic League North Miami Beach Lynda Roberts.

SunTrust and Miami Dolphins Tackle Financial Literacy
SunTrust money experts and Dolphins’ Linebacker Raekwon McMillan share lessons in good money habits at Plantation High School

The Miami Dolphins and SunTrust Banks, Inc. (NYSE: STI) partnered to host a financial literacy workshop at Plantation High School in Plantation, Florida on November 13. The event provided students an interactive forum to learn about managing money in a fun environment.

“Financial confidence starts with healthy money habits, and partnerships like this one helps us spread that confidence amongst our youth to help them become financially fit adults,” said Shawn Sackman, Broward County Market President at SunTrust.

Dolphins Line Backer Raekwon McMillan spoke to students about the importance of financial literacy. Sackman and McMillan led students through FDIC-approved lessons on setting financial goals, aligning spending with values and how to maximize money-making. The lesson ended with a trivia contest; the winner received an autographed Miami Dolphins helmet.

“The Miami Dolphins do a good job of teaching the players about how we can keep money in our pockets and how not to spend too much so I think it is good for us to go out and teach throughout the community and teach seniors about it because they are about to be put into the real world in about six months,” said McMillan. “My pitch to them was wants and needs. There is a lot of things in this world you want but you got to figure out what you need and teaching them before they are actually put into the real world helps them and helps them take a jump on it before they go to college.”

Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ Captains Program Join For Football Unites Cultural Tour

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ Captains Program, a diversity and inclusion initiative that brings together middle school students from various backgrounds, held their fourth group event at the FOOTBALL UNITES™ Cultural Tour, which featured stops in Liberty City and Little Haiti on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Current players Stephone Anthony, Jerome Baker, Leonte Carroo, Xavien Howard, Durham Smythe and Jamiyus Pittman along with alumni Arturo Freeman, Lorenzo Hampton, Anthony Harris, Jim Jensen, Nat Moore, Ed Perry, Troy Stradford and Jed Weaver, cheerleaders and staff took part in the event.

“This FOOTBALL UNITES™ Cultural Tour went to Little Haiti, Liberty City we were able to see different cultures and have these kids come together,” said Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard. “It shows kids the good way of life and puts in a good aspect for them so they can see better for themselves and better for their environment. It was great interacting with the kids, hearing their stories and seeing the different cultures.”

“We are trying to get the players acclimated with all the different parts of Miami. Liberty City is obviously an important part of the fabric of the City of Miami so we want to get people and get the players out in the community to meet with people and meet these kids,” said Vice Chairman, President & CEO of the Miami Dolphins Tom Garfinkel. ”There is a lot of polarization right now going on in society and in the country and we want to bring all kinds of different people together and really have some fun. Getting everyone together enjoying each other and talking and having conversations I think that is really important.”

FOOTBALL UNITES™ Captains meet once a month for a day of learning about tolerance, acceptance and leadership. Dolphins players and alumni join these students to share their stories, perspectives and experiences. The Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE) assists with programming and program evaluation. Youth of the Boys & Girls Club of Broward County, North Miami PAL, North Miami Beach PAL, Greater Miami Pop Warner Tamiami Colts Jr. Varsity, Temple Beth Am Day School as well as community leaders participated in this event.

“It was truly gratifying to have everyone, especially the youth, experience the neighborhood that I grew up in so that they could learn the history and also see all the changes that have taken place,” said Senior Vice President of Special Projects and Alumni Relations Nat Moore. “South Florida has such a proud and unique background and the Miami Dolphins recognize that and want to celebrate that and that is what we are doing through the FOOTBALL UNITES™ program.”

The group began with a tour of Little Haiti making stops at Chef Creole and the Little Haiti Cultural Center.

“The Miami Dolphins organization brought them (the youth) to Little Haiti to educate them about heritage and tradition and also they were hungry so they had some of Chef Creole’s famous liberty freedom soup,” said Owner and Chef of Chef Creole Wilkinson Sejour. “Everybody these days is guessing, your neighbor you don’t know who they are and you have a misconception about everything. But when you’re able to have a liaison and you have the Miami Dolphins organization that has the man power to provide and get the resources together in order to educate you about everything it is a no brainer.”

Afterwards, the group toured Liberty City and visited Charles Hadley Park to learn about the community and watch a performance.

“What the Dolphins are doing here today is great. They bring kids from all across South Florida to have them on this cultural tour and by coming by Liberty City Optimists in Liberty City we are telling them about our great program and our great city and the history of our city,” said Founder of Liberty City Optimists Luther Campbell. ”Especially in this climate of the world, NFL players and organizations are coming out and being a part of the community not just saying it. That is one good thing about the Dolphins they don’t just say things they go out and they’ll invite people into their world as well as come out into our world, which is a great thing.”

“I think the kids really enjoyed having some of the Dolphins players and alumni here It is a wonderful organization, this is a very diverse community and we should and need to respect each other’s cultures and race,” said Miami-Dade County Vice Chairwoman of the Board of County Commissioners Audrey Edmonson.

This tour marks the third of four FOOTBALL UNITES™ Cultural Tours scheduled throughout the year. These unique experiences are a result of a joint partnership with the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau to provide local youth, community leaders and law enforcement the opportunity to experience the richness, diversity and history of South Florida.
