Miami Dolphins re-sign 6 former players
MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins today announced they re-signed tackle Vernon Carey, wide receiver Chris Chambers, defensive end Jeff Cross, linebacker/defensive end A.J. Duhe, punter Brandon Fields and defensive tackle Paul Soliai. Each player signed a one-day contract and will officially retire as members of the Miami Dolphins.
These six former players were added to the active roster to further emphasize the bond between the organization and the team’s alumni, who helped established the rich legacy of the Miami Dolphins. The players combined to play 46 seasons for the Dolphins, totaling 681 games played and five Pro Bowl selections.
Carey played his entire high school, college and NFL careers in Miami. After playing high school football at Miami Northwestern High School, Carey moved on to the University of Miami where he helped the Hurricanes win the 2001 national championship. The Dolphins drafted him with their first-round pick (19th overall) in the 2004 NFL draft and Carey went on to play eight seasons (2004-11) for his hometown team. He totaled 121 games played and 107 starts, earning starting assignments at left tackle, right tackle and right guard. Carey was named as a co-winner of the team’s Nat Moore Community Service Award in 2007.
Chambers was selected by Miami in the second-round (52nd overall) in the 2001 NFL draft. He immediately became a presence in the Dolphins offense, leading the team in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns as a rookie. Chambers played seven seasons (2001-07) for the Dolphins and earned a Pro Bowl selection in 2005. He finished his NFL career with 540 receptions for 7,648 yards (14.2 avg.) and 58 touchdowns.
Cross joined the Dolphins as a ninth-round pick (239th overall) in the 1988 NFL draft. He played eight seasons (1988-95) in the NFL, all with the Dolphins. Cross totaled 125 games played with 107 starts and ranks sixth in team history with 59.5 sacks. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1990 when he recorded a career-high 11.5 sacks. In his eight seasons, Cross helped the team to four playoff berths. He was enshrined on the Dolphins Walk of Fame in 2014.
Duhe was Miami’s first-round pick (13th overall) in the 1977 NFL draft and made an immediate impact, winning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors. He played eight NFL seasons (1977-84) at both linebacker and defensive end for the Dolphins and was a member of the “Killer B’s” defense that helped the team reach two Super Bowls in the 1980s. In the 1982 AFC Championship game, Duhe intercepted New York Jets quarterback Richard Todd three times, including one for a touchdown, to help Miami win the game 14-0. He earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1984 and recorded 38.5 career sacks. Duhe was enshrined on the Dolphins Walk of Fame in 2012.
Fields was a seventh-round pick (225th overall) by Miami in the 2007 NFL draft. He played nine NFL seasons, the first eight (2007-14) of which came in Miami. Fields totaled 128 games played for the Dolphins and earned a Pro Bowl selection following the 2013 season. He holds team records for highest punting average in a career, a single season and a game. His career average of 46.7 yards per punt is the fifth-highest in NFL history. Fields either won or co-won the Nat Moore Community Service Award each year from 2011-13.
Soliai joined the Dolphins as a fourth-round pick (108th overall) in the 2007 NFL draft. He played seven (2007-13) of his 10 NFL seasons in Miami and appeared in 99 games with 62 starts for the Dolphins. Soliai earned a Pro Bowl selection following the 2011 season and finished his Dolphins career with 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He was named the team’s recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award in 2013.
