Dolphins Cancer Challenge VIII Celebrates Cancer Survivors and Raises Funds for Cancer Research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
Miami, FL – The Miami Dolphins celebrated the resilience of cancer survivors and capped another successful Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) today. The event is the NFL’s single largest fundraiser. The eighth edition of this annual community endeavor raises funds for innovative cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. The DCC donates 100 percent of participant-raised funds to Sylvester. The event boasted more than 4,000 cancer fighters who biked, ran, walked and volunteered throughout all of South Florida with a goal to tackle cancer. The event culminated with a Concert Celebration at Hard Rock Stadium with Big Head Todd and The Monsters, with headliners the Goo Goo Dolls.
“This year our anthem is to celebrate the resiliency and vitality of cancer survivors. We’re proud to have more than 250 survivors among our largest turnout of participants in our eight-year history. We want to personally thank The Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Foundation for putting a spotlight on these cancer fighters,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President & Dolphins Cancer Challenge Executive Director Jennifer Jehn said. “Each and every dollar raised makes a difference, going directly to Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center for innovative research and targeted therapies. Today was amazing to see the South Florida community come together to tackle cancer.”
The Survivor Program presented by the Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Foundation will continue to share the stories of #CancerFighters, those on the front line who galvanize efforts at the DCC. Survivors within the program received a Living Proof arm sleeve and distinguished-shirt, and are able to partake in a number of events year round, including the Dolphins Crucial Catch campaign, photo series and Survivor Breakfast.
“Our gratitude goes out to everyone involved in the DCC, from the Dolphins to the donors, volunteers and each and every participant,” Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Director Stephen D. Nimer, M.D., said. “We are all partners in this fight to find new cures. The impact of this event and everyone’s commitment cannot be overstated.”
DCC VIII weekend commenced with the Kickoff Party on Friday, Feb. 9, followed by the DCC signature event on Saturday Feb. 10 that included five bike routes through South Florida, a run/walk 5K and a finish line celebration concert by the Goo Goo Dolls with Big Head Todd and The Monsters. The DCC continues to solidify its position as the largest event fundraiser in the NFL.
The Dolphins Cancer Challenge donates 100 percent of the participant-raised funds to innovative cancer research at Sylvester. Funds are still being collected through March 31, 2018.
The Dolphins Cancer Challenge will continue raising funds for cancer research with its third annual DCC Celebrity Golf Tournament on April 13, 2018. The tournament is another chance for cancer fighters to golf and interact with athletes and other celebrity guests. One hundred percent of the funds raised from the golf tournament will benefit Sylvester.

As a new element for this year’s event, Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Ambassador Twan Russell and Broward College representatives led a character development and future education planning talk with the student-athletes on field prior to the game.
“The one thing I got to say is coming back for the second year with a win with these guys and coaching for Miami-Dade County has been awesome,” said Dade Head Coach Tim Neal. “The kids that I’ve coached over the past week were just as good as last year, and I’m so excited that the Miami Dolphins have given this opportunity to these kids.”
“It was a tremendous opportunity for these young men to come out and represent their school, their neighborhood and Broward County one last time. There were some tremendous athletes on this field and they did a great job,” said Broward Head Coach Adam Ratkevich. “I really appreciate the Dolphins, BCAA, Broward College and everybody that helped put this together. It was a great opportunity for these young men, and I think they’ll cherish it for the rest of their lives.”
“We know character and sportsmanship, combined with education and mentorship, are paramount to success in the workforce and in life,” said Broward College Executive Director of Marketing and Strategic Initiatives Don Cook. “We hope all of today’s participating athletes use the same winning drive to succeed in the classroom.”

Landry named to AFC Pro Bowl roster
MIAMI – The National Football League today announced that Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry has been named to the AFC roster for the 2018 Pro Bowl.
The selection marks the third straight year that Landry will finish his season in the Pro Bowl. He also participated in the Pro Bowl following the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Landry is one of eight Dolphins wide receivers to be named to the Pro Bowl and just the fourth to earn the honor three times. He joins Mark Clayton (1984-86) as the only Dolphins receivers to be elected to three consecutive Pro Bowls. Other Dolphins wide receivers to earn Pro Bowl selections include Paul Warfield (1970-74), Nat Moore (1977), Mark Duper (1983-84, 1986), Clayton (1984-86, 1988, 1991), Irving Fryar (1993-94), Chris Chambers (2005) and Brandon Marshall (2011).
Landry totaled 112 receptions in 2017, which led the NFL and broke his own single-season franchise record of 110 that he set in 2015. His 400 career receptions are the most in the NFL through the first four seasons of a player’s career and rank sixth in Dolphins history.
Landry will replace Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who is unable to participate due to injury.
The 2018 Pro Bowl, which kicks off at a new start time of 3 p.m. ET, will take place on Sunday, January 28, and be televised live from Camping World Stadium in Orlando on ESPN and ESPN Deportes and simulcast on ABC. Fans may visit NFL.com/ProBowlOnSale to purchase game tickets.
