HIALEAH, Fla. – As part of the Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ program, Dolphins cornerback Bobby McCain, alumnus Twan Russell, Senior Vice President of Communications & Community Affairs Jason Jenkins and cheerleaders in collaboration with Truist and Operation HOPE hosted the Banking On Our Future financial literacy kickoff event for the 300 students of Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy (JMMA 6-12) to educate them on the importance of financial responsibility on Tuesday, Dec. 17.
“I think saving money is something important to learn at an early age that can and will set you up for the future,” McCain said. “The Miami Dolphins and the FOOTBALL UNITES™ program do a great job of educating and teaching the youth about all aspects of life and finances is just one part of it.”
The event kicked off with a student pep rally in the auditorium of JMMA 6-12 followed by classroom financial literacy sessions led by SunTrust now Truist volunteers to educate the students on budgeting and banking services using the award-winning Banking On Our Future youth financial literacy curriculum developed by nonprofit Operation HOPE. To date, over one million students across the country have been empowered with financial education through the program. The Miami Dolphins also visited each participating classroom to share financial experiences, interact and take photos with the students.
“A significant problem in today’s generation and the economy is the lack of financial literacy,” Operation HOPE Senior Executive Vice President Lance Triggs said. “Many Americans were not taught financial literacy in school. The Operation HOPE Banking On Our Future event at Jose Marti Academy, in partnership with SunTrust Now Truist and the Miami Dolphins, taught a new generation of over 500 students the importance of financial literacy and the language of money to break the cycle of financial illiteracy.”

These efforts and initiatives align with the Miami Dolphins’ goal to level the playing field through the power of teamwork to inspire a healthier, more educated and united South Florida community. Miami Dolphins sign Munson
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed linebacker Calvin Munson off New England’s practice squad and placed linebacker Raekwon McMillan on injured reserve.
Munson has spent the entire season on New England’s practice squad. He also had a lengthy stint on New England’s practice squad in 2018 after spending the offseason and training camp with the N.Y. Giants. Munson played 14 games with five starts for the Giants in 2017, totaling 55 tackles (35 solo), two sacks and one forced fumble. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with the Giants on May 12, 2017.
McMillan played in 13 games with 12 starts for the Dolphins this year, totaling 72 tackles (35 solo) and one pass defensed. In 2018, McMillan became the first Dolphins player since at least 2000 to total 100-plus tackles despite not appearing in an NFL game prior to that season. He originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick (54th overall) by Miami in the 2017 NFL draft.

Miami Dolphins Spread Holiday Cheer at Baptist Children’s Hospital
MIAMI – Miami Dolphins cornerback Xavien Howard, T.D. and staff spent the day visiting patients, distributing gifts and spreading holiday cheer at Baptist Children’s Hospital, part of Baptist Health South Florida, on Monday, Dec. 16.
“Putting a smile on their faces and being able to motivate them, it motivates us to keep pushing and not take things for granted,” Howard said. “I’m in my fourth year here and I love these opportunities that the Dolphins give me, especially with the platform I have to experience priceless moments that I am able to cherish outside of my family.”
The children had the opportunity to interact with Howard and T.D., get autographs and take photos as they received gifts from the Dolphins including stockings and board games in an effort to brighten their day during the holiday season.
“I saw the players and I was really excited and surprised because I really like the team and they gave me a tablet so I am definitely ready for Christmas,” Baptist Children’s Hospital patient Rachel Curbelo said.
“We are grateful to the Miami Dolphins for taking the time from their busy schedules to visit our pediatric patients during the holidays,” Baptist Children’s Hospital Director of Patient Care Lourdes Castaneda, R.N., said. “Their company and gifts help lifts the kids’ and even their families’ spirits at a time that is especially difficult.”

Miami Dolphins promote Hartage
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have promoted safety Montre Hartage to the active roster and waived cornerback Marcus Sherels.
Hartage played in one game with the Dolphins and has spent multiple stints on the Miami practice squad this season. He made one solo tackle in his NFL debut in Week 13 vs. Philadelphia. Hartage originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with Miami on May 9, 2019. He was a four-year letterman (2015-18) and three-year starter at Northwestern, where he earned first-team All-Big Ten honors as a senior in 2018.
Sherels played in five games with the Dolphins and played primarily on special teams. He had six punt returns for 23 yards (3.8 avg.) and three kickoff returns for 57 yards (19.0 avg.). Sherels played 10 seasons (2010-19) in Minnesota and has totaled 128 games played in his NFL career. He originally entered the league as an undrafted college free agent with the Vikings on May 5, 2010.

Miami Dolphins awarded Hayes off waivers
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have been awarded cornerback Tae Hayes off waivers from Jacksonville and placed defensive tackle Gerald Willis on injured reserve.
Hayes played in one game for Jacksonville prior to being waived on Dec. 12, 2019. He originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with Jacksonville on April 28, 2019 and spent eight games on the team’s practice squad before he was promoted to the active roster on Oct. 29, 2019. Hayes was a four-year letterman (2015-18) at Appalachian State, where he was a second-team All-Sun Belt selection as a senior in 2018.
Willis played in two games for the Dolphins this season and totaled two assisted tackles. He spent 10 games on Miami’s practice squad earlier this season after he was signed to the practice squad on Sept. 2, 2019. Willis originally entered the NFL as an undrafted college free agent with Baltimore on May 3, 2019. He earned second-team All-ACC honors as a senior in 2018 at the University of Miami.

Miami Dolphins sign Parker to contract extension
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today announced they have signed wide receiver DeVante Parker to a contract extension through the 2023 season.
Parker has played in 13 games with 11 starts this season and totaled a career high 882 receiving yards, which ranks ninth in the AFC. His six receiving touchdowns this season are also a career high. Parker ranks 15th in Dolphins history in career receiving yards (3,099) and 16th in career receptions (218). He originally entered the NFL as a first-round pick (14th overall) by the Dolphins in the 2015 NFL draft.

Miami Dolphins and Cigna Pack Holiday Care Packages for Overseas Troops at #DolphinsHuddlefor100 Event
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – Miami Dolphins alumnus Pat Surtain along with Dolphins mascot TD joined forces with the South Florida Cigna team to pack holiday care packages for overseas troops as part of the #DolphinsHuddlefor100 at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday, Dec. 13.
“Cigna is proud to partner with the Miami Dolphins to bring holiday cheer to the men and women who serve our country,” Cigna Market President for South Florida Scott Evelyn said. “Our company is a strong supporter of the military, from sponsoring the Marine Corps Marathon to launching a free Support Line for all veterans and their families. Through today’s #DolphinsHuddlefor100 we’re sending a little piece of home to those serving overseas.”
Throughout the morning, the group including 100 Cigna employees packed 4,500 holiday care packages. Packages will be distributed to all branches of the military that have requested these packages via Anysolider.com

Dolphins Cancer Challenge partners with Ambetter from Sunshine Health as presenting sponsor of the DCC 5K
Miami Gardens, FL – The Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) has tapped Ambetter from Sunshine Health as the presenting sponsor of the DCC 5K. This marks the tenth edition of the popular community event that raises funds for innovative cancer research at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, a part of UHealth — the University of Miami Health System.
“We are proud to support The Dolphins Cancer Challenge to help raise funds for innovative cancer research, a disease that impacts many of our Ambetter members’ lives,” CEO of Sunshine Health Chris Coffey said. “It’s inspiring to see thousands of people come together for a common cause and it is a reminder to those battling the disease that we’re all here to support them, to fund research and find cures.”
DCC 10 weekend will commence with the Kickoff Party on Friday, Feb. 28, followed by the DCC signature event on Saturday, Feb. 29, that will include five bike routes through South Florida and a run/walk 5K presented by Ambetter – extending the opportunity for cancer fighters to be of all ages and all capabilities.
“We are excited to announce a multi-year partnership with Ambetter,” Miami Dolphins Foundation Executive Director Jesse Marks said. “Ambetter delivers high quality health insurance and locally-based care services to their members. We are happy to have their commitment to stand with us and the South Florida community to tackle cancer. The Dolphins Cancer Challenge 5k presented by Ambetter will give our runners and walkers an opportunity to enjoy a fun fundraising 5k around Hard Rock Stadium on Feb. 29th, 2020.”
DCC 10 will conclude at the Finish Line Presented by AutoNation and celebrate with a Finish Line Festival presented by Moss Construction on the grounds of the tennis campus at Hard Rock Stadium. The event will feature live entertainment throughout the day from the Ultimate Stage present by Ultimate Software. The festival grounds included delicious cuisine and beverages from the roof top bar and beer garden as well as games, inflatables, a petting zoo, yoga, massages and more for the whole family. Additionally, DCC 10 will spotlight survivors – their resiliency and path to overcome the obstacles cancer presents in their journey. The Survivor Program presented by Harcourt M. and Virginia W. Sylvester Foundation will share the stories of #CancerFighters, those on the front line who galvanize our efforts at the DCC.
The DCC was founded in 2010 by the Miami Dolphins organization as the signature initiative of the Foundation’s health impact area. The DCC’s purpose is to improve people’s lives through financial support for innovative cancer research at Sylvester, South Florida’s only National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated cancer center. Sylvester is now among the top cancer centers in the United States and joins a highly select group as one of only two NCI-designated cancer centers in the state of Florida and one of just 71 across the nation. Since its inception, the DCC has raised more than $32.5 million, donating 100 percent of participant-raised funds to Sylvester.
These initiatives align with the Miami Dolphins Foundation’s commitment towards leveling the playing field through the power of teamwork to inspire a healthier, more educated and united South Florida Community.
