Miami Dolphins Host Fourth FOOTBALL UNITES™ Cultural Tour presented by Baptist Health

MIAMI – Miami Dolphins players Isaiah Ford, Steven Parker and Christian Wilkins, alongside Dolphins’ staff, spent the day with local youth, community leaders and law enforcement visiting the Stonewall Museum and Islamic Center of Greater Miami to experience the richness and diversity of South Florida as part of the Dolphins’ fourth FOOTBALL UNITES™ Cultural Tour presented by Baptist Health of the season on Tuesday, Dec. 10.

“This is very important for myself and the community because it allows us to learn other people’s culture, learn about the community we live in and gives the community the opportunity to actually see us as just people not just football players inside the helmet,” Parker said. “I think it’s really good that the Dolphins do things like this because it allows everyone to come together and be around the kids to share and gain knowledge along with them.”

The tour, in partnership with the Greater Miami and Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureaus, began with a visit to the Stonewall Museum to explore the history, art and culture of South Florida’s LGBTQ community. The group then visited the Islamic Center of Greater Miami, toured the facility and experienced a traditional meal to learn about Muslim culture and the area’s Islamic heritage.

“We appreciate what FOOTBALL UNITES™ does to bring communities together for positive interactions and social experiences so we can create these dialogues within our communities and develop an understanding,” Stonewall National Museum & Archives Deputy Director Emery Grant said. “Anytime that we have a chance to come together with positive community groups and start a dialogue about our mutual shared experiences and differences in ways that are thoughtful and respectful we are helping to develop healthy communities.”

“Sports has amazing and unique way of making a positive impact in society,” Islamic Center of Greater Miami Imam & Religious Director Dr. Abdul Hamid Samra said. “We appreciate the Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ Cultural Tour visiting our center and we hope that it will encourage and achieve better understanding and harmony among all our communities in South Florida.”

These initiatives align with the organization’s goal to level the playing field through the power of teamwork to inspire a healthier, more educated and united South Florida community. Dolphins Chairman of the Board & Managing General Partner Stephen Ross and Dolphins players created the FOOTBALL UNITES™ program as a way to bring positive social change. The Miami Dolphins organization believes it is important to be inclusive of the diversity and aware of the intersections that make up South Florida, uniting groups of different races, genders, sexual orientations, identities, abilities and faiths around the power of football.

These programs connect to the NFL’s Inspire Change platform, showcasing the collaborative efforts of players, owners and the league to create positive change in communities across the country and work with RISE – the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality – to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice and improve race relations. Miami Dolphins Announce Miami-Dade County Public Schools Student Winner of Values Matter Miami Cleat Design Contest

MIAMI– As part of the Miami Dolphins’ FOOTBALL UNITES™ partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) through Values Matter Miami (VMM), Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Christian Wilkins and M-DCPS Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho surprised eighth grade student Healy Barrientos as the winner of the district-wide cleat design contest for the NFL’s “My Cause, My Cleats” campaign on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

“Her design represents different races, unity and all the qualities that I stand for and the values we are trying to emphasize and instill in people through Values Matter Miami,” Wilkins said. “I am someone who always tries to emphasize that it is bigger than football. There is no sense in being a great football player if you’re not going to be a person of great character and high value. It’s important that I came here so I can be more accessible and real to the kids to spend some time with them, be in the classroom and shed some light and share some love.”

In celebration of the NFL’s third consecutive Unboxing Day, a league-wide unveiling of the players’ custom cleats, Barrientos’ design was selected out of 80 student submissions throughout all K-12 M-DCPS. Local artist Soles by Sir customized the cleats and joined in unveiling the design in front of the students and staff of West Miami Middle School. Wilkins will wear the winning cleat design as the Dolphins face off the Cincinnati Bengals at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday, Dec. 22.

“I am just really happy I wasn’t expecting to get picked and I can’t wait to see it on him. I want to pursue my dream of art and this is just a great start,” Barrientos said.

Along with her surprise, Barrientos also received a Dolphins jersey, matching custom sneakers and tickets to support and represent VMM and Wilkins at the Dolphins vs. Bengals game.

Values Matter Miami is M-DCPS’ exciting values education program designed to promote education and values among its students. Over the past four years, it has engaged students in actively learning about nine core values, – Respect, Honesty, Kindness, Fairness, Integrity, Citizenship, Cooperation, Responsibility and Pursuit of Excellence – inside and outside of the classroom.

“Values Matter Miami is a recognition of the good deeds, positive actions and model behaviors demonstrated by our students,” Carvalho said. “We are proud to partner with the Dolphins to celebrate and honor the decency, honesty and values exhibited by our students each and every day.”

Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ Collaborates with North Miami Police Department for Community Building Ride Along

NORTH MIAMI, FL– The Miami Dolphins FOOTBALL UNITES™ program collaborated with North Miami Police Department (NMPD) for a community building ride along to demonstrate a unified front between Dolphins players and law enforcement on Tuesday, Dec. 3. Miami Dolphins players Walt Aikens, Shaq Calhoun, Julién Davenport and Albert Wilson joined NMPD to participate in a series of activities and facilitated discussions to engage the community, discuss community policing and emphasize importance of perspective taking.

“We are definitely trying to bridge that gap and get the community and the police together,” Wilson said. “The things the Dolphins are doing with these ride alongs in the community it’s a great thing and that’s exactly what we are trying to do to build that connection.”

As part of the ride along, Miami Dolphins players were paired with law enforcement officers to visit local communities and youth organizations in Miami-Dade County making stops at the Police Athletic League Facility and Center Court Apartments in North Miami.

“We have to make ourselves available and continue to make great efforts in the community to make sure our social justice reform continues,” Davenport said. “The youth are the future of our world and you can never do enough to give back and make sure that we have our children going in the right direction in life. I have a lot of history with the police athletic league, the police department in my family as well so it touches home and it means a lot to be here.”

“The North Miami Police Department working as partners of FOOTBALL UNITES™, while addressing community issues of mutual concern, enables us to unify our resources to bring about positive solutions,” North Miami Police Department Chief of Police Larry Juriga said. “Discussing significant topics like social justice and criminal justice reform is sometimes difficult but it is necessary for us to reach a better understanding of the problems and ultimately find remedies to bring about equality.  Our visits were impactful and it was great to see our police officers engaging with our neighbors, especially the children.  It provided us with another opportunity to positively develop our relationships and increase the community’s trust in us.”

The FOOTBALL UNITES™ Law Enforcement program consists of Miami Dolphins players, alumni, cheerleaders and staff working with local law enforcement to jointly engage youth, discuss community policing and promote positive interactions. Anchor events include a Police and Youth Conference with the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project and ride alongs. This marks the team’s seventh law enforcement ride along and is the third ride along with NMPD.

These efforts and initiatives align with the organization’s goal to level the playing field through the power of teamwork to inspire a healthier, more educated and united South Florida community.
