Miami Dolphins Hosts 5000 Role Models of Excellence Foundation Wilson Scholars Sendoff

MIAMI GARDENS, FL – The Miami Dolphins and the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Foundation today hosted the Wilson Scholars Sendoff in which fifty-eight Wilson Scholars received computers for their academic studies.

In attendance were Miami Dolphins Alum Vernon Carey as well as the program’s founder, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson.

“This is a fabulous night. This is the night where we give the boys computers donated by the Miami Dolphins. Our home team, and we’re so proud of the partnership we have generated with our home team all of these years,” Wilson said. “Stephen Ross is a champion, a drum major, for social justice. He is reaching into the community, helping children, lifting them up, sending them to college, giving them internships and scholarships. He stands out as a textbook example for what you should be as a corporation in a city. And we are so proud to have him as a partner. I brag about him all the time.”

Tonight’s event follows the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Foundations Police and Youth Conference as well as the Academic Signing Ceremony in which the Wilson Scholars signed scholarships to the colleges and universities of their choice. These signature events are part of a long-term partnership with the Miami Dolphins, centering on social justice, education and police and youth relations. In all, these social justice community initiatives will affect more than 10,000 Role Models.

“We’re proud of our partnership with 5000 Role Models and the work we’re doing, in collaboration with them, to level the playing field for these young men,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications & Community Affairs Jason Jenkins said. “These computers they received tonight is one tool to further their education and shape a bright future for the community.”

These sponsorships are part of a yearly fund for advocacy and social justice programs created by Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross and Miami Dolphins players.

These initiatives are additions to the previous work in this space through the team’s collaboration with the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE). Founded and created by Ross in October 2015, RISE harnesses the unifying power of sports to improve race relations and drive social progress. Since its founding, RISE programs have reached more than 30,000 students, coaches and athletic staff at the high school, collegiate and professional level. Miami Dolphins and Defensive Tackle Vincent Taylor Surprise Pompano Beach High School Football Team with Equipment Donation

Pompano Beach, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins surprised the Pompano Beach High School football team with new equipment for its program. Dolphins defensive tackle Vincent Taylor was on hand for the surprise. The donated equipment included Dolphins branded shirts, Gatorade coolers, blocking shields, medicine balls and cleats. The team also had the opportunity to hear from Dolphins alum and Youth Programs Ambassador Twan Russell about perseverance and the importance of teamwork.

“It was an honor to give the kids equipment they didn’t have, even if it was a pair of cleats,” Taylor said. “I remember being in their same shoes and getting a pair of cleats from somebody just made me want to play harder.”

“It was amazing to have the Miami Dolphins organization come out and donate and talk to the team,” Pompano Beach High School Head Football Coach Melvin Jones said. “It scratches things off our list that we need to get so we can fundraise for some other things to look good. We’re thankful and truly blessed and everything is going to go a long way.”

This is the second Junior Dolphins Equipment Donation this year. The Dolphins also made a donation to Miramar High School in May.

Miami Dolphins Unveil Six Former Players to Walk of Fame

MIAMI – The Miami Dolphins today announced they will add the stars of six former players to the team’s Walk of Fame this season: safety Dick Anderson, wide receiver Mark Clayton, wide receiver Mark Duper, tackle Jon Giesler, linebacker John Offerdahl and defensive end/linebacker Jason Taylor.

The six combined to earn 22 Pro Bowl selections, seven first-team All Pro nods, won seven AFC Championships and two Super Bowl titles. The group collectively played 61 seasons for the Dolphins, appearing in 828 games with 741 starts.

Anderson was a three-time Pro Bowl safety (1972-74) and played in 10 seasons (1968-77) for the Dolphins. One of the leaders on the No Name Defense, he was a first-team All-Pro selection on the 1972 undefeated team. In 1973, Anderson led the league in interceptions (8) and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year, assisting the Dolphins in winning their second straight Super Bowl. His 34 career interceptions are still second all-time in Dolphins history. Anderson was named to the Dolphins Honor Roll on Dec. 3, 2006, is a member of the NFL’s 1970s All-Decade Team and Dolphins’ 50th Season All-Time Team. Anderson was also enshrined into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993.

Clayton was a five-time Pro Bowl wide receiver (1984-86, 1988, 1991) and played 10 seasons (1983-92) for the Dolphins. He saw action in 142 games with 127 starts during his Dolphins tenure and totaled 550 receptions for 8,643 yards (15.7 avg.) and 81 touchdowns. His 550 receptions and 81 receiving touchdowns are both franchise records that still stand today. Clayton set the NFL record (since eclipsed) with 18 receiving touchdowns in 1984. He also led the NFL in receiving touchdowns in 1988 (14). He was inducted into the Dolphins Honor Roll on Dec. 15, 2003 and is a member of the team’s 50th Season All-Time Team.

Duper played 11 seasons with the Dolphins (1982-92) and was a three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver (1983-84, 1986). He totaled four 1,000-yard seasons (1983-84, 1986, 1991) and 22 100-yard efforts. He is the team’s all-time leader with 8,869 career receiving yards. His 511 receptions are second in team history while his 59 touchdown receptions are third. A downfield threat, Duper averaged 17.4 yards per reception throughout his career, the second-best mark in franchise annals and the sixth-highest in NFL history among receivers with 500-plus career catches. He was inducted into the Dolphins Honor Roll on Dec. 15, 2003 and is a member of the team’s 50th Season All-Time Team.

Giesler played 10 NFL seasons (1979-88), all with the Dolphins. He played in 126 career games with 105 starts, all at left tackle. As the anchor of Miami’s offensive line, Geisler helped the Dolphins lead or tie for the league lead in fewest sacks allowed in each of his final seven seasons (1982-88). He helped Miami win two AFC Championships (1982 and 1984) and protected the blind side of Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino for the first six years of Marino’s career. He was the team’s 1987 nominee for the Ed Block Courage Award and was selected by fans to the organization’s silver anniversary team.

Offerdahl was a five-time Pro Bowl selection (1986-90) and the 1986 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year after the Dolphins selected him in the second round (52nd overall) of the 1986 NFL Draft. Offerdahl earned first-team All-Pro honors in 1990. He was named to the Dolphins Honor Roll on Oct. 31, 2013 and is a member of the team’s 50th Season All-Time Team. Offerdahl was named the team’s Ed Block Courage Award nominee in 1993 and is a three-time recipient (1989-90, 1993) of the team’s Nat Moore Community Service Award.

Taylor is a six-time Pro Bowl defensive end/linebacker (2000, 2002, 2004-07), three-time first-team All-Pro honoree (2000, 2002, 2006) and member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He played 13 seasons with the Dolphins (1997-2007, 2009, 2011) and is the franchise’s all-time leader in sacks (131). His 204 games played and 186 starts are second in team annals and he has the organization’s second-longest consecutive-games played streak when he appeared in 130 straight games from 1999 until 2007. Taylor was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2006, Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2007 and is a member of the NFL’s 2000s All-Decade Team. He was inducted into the Dolphins Honor Roll on Oct. 14, 2012 and is a member of the team’s 50th Season All-Time Team.

The presentation will be held at the Walk of Fame outside of the North Gate at Hard Rock Stadium prior to the Dolphins game vs. Buffalo presented by AARP Foundation on Sunday, Dec. 2. The honorees also will be honored on the field at halftime of the Bills game.

The Walk of Fame, located at Joe Robbie Alumni Plaza, which includes a statue of Dolphins Founder Joe Robbie, was established in 2011 as a way to recognize individuals who played significant roles in team history. Miami Dolphins Host Gatorade Junior Training Camp

Miami Gardens, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins today hosted a Gatorade Junior Training Camp at Hard Rock Stadium. Dolphins cornerback Tony Lippett and alum Troy Drayton taught football specific drills as well as heat and hydration safety to middle school athletes from local schools and organizations. Participants also received a Gatorade Junior Training Camp t-shirt.

“When I was younger, I didn’t go on an NFL field and visualize myself making plays. The kids are out here enjoying themselves in Hard Rock Stadium and probably visualizing themselves making plays out here on any yard line,” Lippett said. “It’s a good gesture from the Miami Dolphins and Gatorade for the kids to come out here and have fun on a Saturday morning.”

“We all work together to build brighter days for the youth of our community. We collectively are the village. Support from the Dolphins and Gatorade with this goal is wonderful,” Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert said.

The Gatorade Junior Training Camp is a positive football experience that focuses on football fundamentals and skill development designed to motivate, inspire and educate the next generation of youth football athletes.

Miami Dolphins and Ashley HomeStore Surprise 100 Kids with Beds at Hope to Dream Sleepover

Davie, Fla. — The Miami Dolphins and Ashley HomeStore surprised 100 underprivileged children with the gift of comfortable sleep for years come at the second annual South Florida Hope to Dream Sleepover. Each of the children enjoyed a sleepover party at the Baptist Health Training Facility, where they received their very own twin-size bed and bedding from Ashley HomeStore, decked out with a Miami Dolphins comforter.

“Seeing the surprise and joy on so many kids’ faces makes this an event we love creating with the Dolphins,” said Keith Koenig, president of City Furniture, the Southeast and Southwest Florida licensee for City Furniture. “The children have the chance to party on the training field and get up close with players, and it’s great knowing they’ll rest easy on their new beds for years to come.”

The event hosted by the Miami Dolphins on June 23 was the latest gridiron-themed sleepover for Ashley HomeStore’s international Hope to Dream initiative. The kids enjoyed dinner, toured the Dolphins locker room and powered through fun games and activities with Miami Dolphins players Andre Branch, Davon Godchaux, Xavien Howard, Raekwon McMillan, cheerleaders and mascot TD before a dance party on their new beds.

“Some kids didn’t have a bed to sleep on before they came,” Dolphins LB Raekwon McMillan said. “When they leave tomorrow, they’ll be able to sleep good because of us giving back and having fun with them tonight. The Miami Dolphins are like a family – everything we do is for the community and for the people around us.”

Ashley HomeStore, the largest furniture retailer in the U.S., dedicates a portion of proceeds from every mattress sale at participating locations to its Hope to Dream program, which has donated 50,000 new beds and bedding to children in need since 2010. All Ashley HomeStore locations in Miami-Dade through Martin counties in South Florida are active year-round in the Hope to Dream charity’s donation program.

Also helping bring the South Florida Hope to Dream Sleepover to life were Simmons Serta, Bedgear and Mantua.
