Miami Dolphins Foundation Partner with Miami Sports Medicine Institute to Sponsor Baseline Concussion Testing for Miami-Dade County Public Schools High School Athletics Program
Program to Impact More Than 15,000 High School Students Athletes
Miami, FL – The Miami Dolphins Foundation, through their revamped Youth Programs platform, has partnered with the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute and KiDZ Neuroscience Center at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis to sponsor The University of Miami Countywide Concussion Care High School Program for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. In all, the program will impact more than 15,000 high school student athletes per year.
“We are excited to aid student-athletes, parents and coaches of all sports in working with the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute to help identify, treat and establish protocols on concussions and reinforce health and safety standards,” said Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications & Community Affairs Jason Jenkins. “Sports play such an important role in character development and teach positive lessons of teamwork, physical and mental toughness, resilience and competiveness.”
The University of Miami Countywide Concussion Care High School Program was established in 2012. The program followed the passing of the Florida Youth Concussion Legislation, a state law that requires that any student-athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion must immediately be pulled from the playing field and receive medical clearance to return to play. Initial funds were raised through The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis by Ransom Everglades School to assist with the running of the program. Over the years, the program has expanded to include all contact high school sports in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
“Our team is excited about this partnership with the Miami Dolphins,” said Gillian Hotz, Ph.D., Director of the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute’s concussion program. “Their understanding of the importance of education, safety and concussion management in high school sports enables us to provide a safer playing field for local student athletes.”
The Countywide Concussion Care High School Program includes a 6 STEPS TO PLAY SAFE protocol that is managed by a multidisciplinary team of experts in neurology, neurosurgery, neuroscience, ENT, physical therapy and neuropsychology. An annual education and training workshop is provided by a multidisciplinary medical team for all high school athletic trainers and athletic directors prior to each football season to update their knowledge of the protocol and concussion management. In addition, concussion education is provided to all high school football teams through video and classroom discussions.
As part of this relationship, the Dolphins will take part in the annual concussion seminar on Aug. 2 at the University of Miami Sports Medicine Institute at The Lennar Foundation Medical Center.
Additionally, the Miami Dolphins Youth Programs have sponsored a high school training program at Norland High School for the last two years, partnered with USA Football to cover the cost of training for all coaches that take part in Player Safety Coach (PSC) certifications and have hosted area youth and high school boys and girls football teams to watch offseason practices and take part in character building sessions.

Miami Dolphins Hosted 14 High School & Youth Football Teams at OTAs & Minicamp Practices
Davie, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins hosted 14 high school and youth football teams during their Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and minicamp practices as part of the team’s new youth football platform of character building and reinforcing safety standards.
“We started kicking some ideas around of what can we do to help? What can we do to encourage kids that this is a great sport and there is something about when you’re a part of a team?’ It’s not all about the individual. There is something about when you have that family feel. We felt like this was something we could do to really help, especially really young kids, but high school kids as well. You realize NFL players do exactly what we have to do every day. I think that’s cool for kids to see,” Miami Dolphins Head Coach Adam Gase said. “Whether it was little kids or high school kids, our players don’t want to disappoint. They want to put on a good show. The competition was outstanding through the whole spring and a lot of it was because they want to look good for the kids that look up to them.”
The teams were given a tour of the Baptist Health Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University and heard from Miami Dolphins President & CEO Tom Garfinkel or Youth Programs Ambassador Twan Russell on work ethic, overcoming adversity, teamwork and physical/mental toughness. The teams then watched the Dolphins practice and met with current players on the field. Following each practice, the athletes had lunch provided by Papa John’s or Wendy’s.
“I saw that [the Dolphins] participated at a high level. I saw guys that love what they were doing,” said Miami Carol City Senior High School Head Coach Benedict Hyppolite. “I love the atmosphere. I love what Adam Gase is bringing to South Florida.”
“As a high school athlete, the moment was surreal,” Fort Lauderdale High School defensive end Emanuel Vilatoro said. “I look up to these guys. I see them on TV every Sunday. To see them practice and go through the motions and see what they do and their habits, [I will] take them back to school and implement them in my training and growth as a player.”
“We both play the same sport, and we love football. To actually see a team in a county that we live in, I think it was awesome,” said Hollywood Hills High School Girls Flag linebacker Kiara Samuel. “The linebackers were very locked down, very focused on the position, they communicated and it was a good experience to actually see somebody professionally play (the position).”

Miami Dolphins Host Miami Northwestern Senior High School, Liberty City Optimist, Cooper City High School, Cooper City High School Girls Flag, Miami Carol City Senior High School & Miami Carol City Senior High School Girls Flag Football Teams at Minicamp Practices
Davie, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins this week hosted the Miami Northwestern Senior High School, Liberty City Optimist, Cooper City High School, Cooper City High School Girls Flag, Miami Carol City Senior High School & Miami Carol City Senior High School Girls Flag football teams at their minicamp practices. The teams were given a tour of the Baptist Health Training Facility at Nova Southeastern University and heard from Miami Dolphins Youth Program Ambassador Twan Russell about the importance of having good character, leadership and overcoming adversity.
“I think it was awesome, because some of our guys want to be here later on in life,” said Miami Northwestern Senior High School Head Football Coach Max Edwards. “To see the type of atmosphere they would be around and see the type of work ethic they need to have to get here, hopefully it’ll help me help our team practice better.”
“Wonderful opportunity. [It was a] learning experience for myself and the kids to learn what it takes to make it to the next level,” Liberty City Optimist Head Coach Herbert Ritchie. “[To] talk to the players, interact with the players, some of these kids will never have the chance to see them in real life, so today was very informational, very motivational.”
“Anytime young guys have the opportunity to get around professional athletes, it brings a level of awareness to them as far as if they want to be on that level, how things need to be done,” said Cooper City High School Head Coach Brandon Walker. “It’s an invaluable experience for these young men to be around men of this caliber, players of this caliber.”
“I saw that [the Dolphins] participated at a high level. I saw guys that love what they were doing,” said Miami Carol City Senior High School Head Coach Benedict Hyppolite. “I love the atmosphere. I love what Adam Gase is bringing to South Florida.”
The Northwestern, Liberty City Optimist, Cooper City and Carol City teams also had the opportunity to watch the Dolphins practice and meet with current players on the field. Following practice, the athletes had lunch provided by Wendy’s.
“It was fun. I met a lot of players I didn’t know. I met a lot of players that I did know and got to one-on-one interact with them,” Miami Northwestern Senior High School defensive end/outside linebacker Demetreius Mayes Jr. “My favorite player to see was Cameron Wake. I love the way he plays.”
“It’s a great experience to be able to come out and see the best of the best,” Cooper City High School wide receiver/safety Marc Brent. “It’s nice seeing the people I look up to like Jarvis Landry, DeVante Parker and being able to watch them practice and actually meet them in person.”
“It was a great experience to see the older guys and where I want to be and what they do on the daily,” said Miami Carol City Senior High School free safety Irshaad Davis. “Reshad Jones – I liked the way he communicated with his guys on the field, and the way he moves.”
The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ mission is to transform the lives of youth football players by instilling character building and reinforcing safety standards that help to increase football participation and grow a new generation of Dolphins fans.
