Dolphins Academy Hosted More Than 1,300 Youth and High School Students as Part of 7on7 Tournament
Three-day event featured on-field action and a symposium led by Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE)
Miami, FL – Miami Dolphins Youth Programs hosted more than 1,300 student-athletes as part of the 9th annual Dolphins Academy Youth and High School 7on7 Tournament. The event began on Friday, June 24 with a symposium at the Don Taft University Center Arena at Nova Southeastern University with breakout sessions led by the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality (RISE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to harnessing the unifying power of sport to advance race relations and drive social progress (RISEtoWIN.org). Athletes heard from RISE speaker Derek Greenfield and participated in special individual and group activities designed to increase team building and communication skills.
“Friday’s symposium set the tone for the weekend by emphasizing the importance of respect, understanding of differences and teamwork. The level of engagement demonstrated by the athletes during the activities was exciting to see and continued throughout the tournament.” RISE Executive Director Ndidi Massay said.
The high school football tournament commenced on Saturday, June 25 at Plantation Park. The tournament consisted of round robin play and then moved into a single elimination format. The high school teams competed in the championship round on Sunday, June 26. Carol City won the tournament 35-31 against Miami Northwestern.
28 teams also competed in the youth tournament, which consisted of three age groups (10U, 12U and 14U). Miramar won both the 10U and 12U competitions, with DKC taking first place in the 14U category. Additionally, all participants had the opportunity to take part in RISE’s “It Takes All Colors” photo booth throughout the event.
“Our mission is to be the stewards of the game of football in South Florida and we were excited to host athletes and coaches at our symposium and tournament,” Miami Dolphins Senior Director of Community Affairs Twan Russell said. “We were able to engage students not only on the field, but had the opportunity to develop their character beyond sports which is equally important.”

Miami Dolphins Rookies Participate in “Health in the Hood” Project
Miami – Members of the Miami Dolphins Rookie Class along with AARP Foundation Special Teams Community Service Academy assisted in beautifying a Liberty City garden. Activities included weeding, bed clearing, soil replenishment and planting.
“It’s my first time actually planting, picking up all that types of stuff,” Miami Dolphins first-round pick Laremy Tunsil said. “It’s a good thing to come out here and help these kids because these kids go through a lot. To see some football players come out here and engage with them, it’s pretty good. I like to see kids having a smile on their face.”
Health in the Hood urban gardens are located in three of Miami’s most disadvantaged, food desert communities. The neighborhoods have little or no access to fresh fruits and vegetables, health education or organized exercise programs. The vegetables grown are given away to families who need them the most. The gardens also serve as a living classroom for kids to connect to their food choices through nutrition and fitness workshops.
“I have this amazing group of guys out here working their tails off, helping us replenish the gardens, adding soil, planting peppers, collard greens and lettuce. It means everything. We’ve got tons of kids out here that couldn’t be more excited to have this great group of kids out there with us,” Health in the Hood Executive Director Asha Loring said. “They say about gardens: your mind is free and your hands are busy. It’s a really good opportunity for people to get in touch with their community, really give back. It’s an easy, fun project.”

The NFL Officially Awards Super Bowl LIV in 2020 to Miami/South Florida, Committee To Move Forward With Proposed Plans for Hosting The Super Bowl for a Record-Breaking 11th Time
The Game Will Include Exciting Features Such As Super Bowl Park with Tailgate Town, Floating Chalets and More…
MIAMI, FL – The NFL has awarded Super Bowl LIV to South Florida in 2020. The announcement from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell came during the NFL’s Spring League Meeting in Charlotte. The Miami Super Bowl Host Committee now begins moving forward with proposed plans to host the NFL’s Championship Game a record-breaking 11th time.
The game will be held at the newly revamped Dolphins’ stadium, which features an extensively modernized exterior, shade canopy, four high-definition scoreboards and countless other enhancements, a result of the Miami Dolphins’ more than $450 million privately funded renovation.
Super Bowl Park and the NFL Experience will be hosted in Miami, showcasing its vibrant waterfront, and offering easy accessibility for legions of guests, media and fans from throughout South Florida. Renderings of the proposed park include a Tailgate Town, floating chalets on Biscayne Bay, and a zipline with skyline views of Downtown Miami.
“I can’t think of a better place to host the Super Bowl than right here in our world-class community,” Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said. “Miami has hosted more Super Bowls than any other city, and it’s clear why. This is the place to live, work and play, and hosting the Super Bowl at Dolphins’ stadium once again serves as further evidence that Miami is a major event community.”
First chosen as a finalist in 2015, this week South Florida competed against Atlanta, New Orleans, Tampa and Los Angeles to secure the big game. Tuesday’s presentation was the final hurdle in the Bid Committee’s year-long effort to bring the Super Bowl back to Miami after nearly a decade. The Bid was presented by Miami Dolphins Hall of Famer and Super Bowl VIII MVP Larry Csonka. Team Owner Stephen Ross then spoke separately to owners to share about his newly renovated stadium and the region’s many positives, as did owners for competing cities. Immediately following, the 32 NFL owners’ votes were tallied, with Commissioner Goodell announcing the winning cities live on the NFL Network from the Ballantyne Hotel in Charlotte, NC.
“We were confident. It was definitely our most competitive bid ever,” said Rodney Barreto, Chairman of the Super Bowl Host Committee. He counts off: “A $450-million-plus enhancement to Dolphins’ stadium. A budget of cash and incentives valued at more than $40 million. A warm weather destination that always delivers. Always. We are truly thankful to Mr. Stephen Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins, for all his support and assistance throughout this process.”
About The Miami Super Bowl Host Committee
The South Florida Super Bowl Bid Committee is comprised of talented community leaders who, for more than a quarter century, have worked with both the public and private sector to bring the Super Bowl and its significant economic benefits and media exposure to South Florida. In 2010, South Florida hosted a record-breaking 10th Super Bowl, and for the first time in more than 30 years, also hosted the 2010 Pro Bowl. Both games were considered hugely successful for the NFL and the South Florida community. At the NFL owners meeting in May, Miami was awarded Super Bowl 54, a record-breaking eleventh Super Bowl for the region. For additional information, visit SFLsuperbowl.com.

A sold-out field of more than 36 foursomes had the opportunity to golf with a Miami Dolphins current or former player. First place went to the team of City National, with Jorge Martinez, John Costa, Wade Helms and Miami Dolphins alumnus Lousaka Polite. After the golf tournament, participants took part in the Hook & Tackle Captain’s Party presented by South Florida Ford at the Miami Beach Marina. Guests gathered inside a tent at the Miami Beach Marina to revel in music, local food vendors and the year’s largest gathering of players, coaches, alumni and cheerleaders.
“For two decades, Fins Weekend has been a staple in South Florida, bringing together players, coaches, cheerleaders and the community to benefit a greater cause,” Fins Weekend Committee Chair Jeff Peck said. “We look forward to many more decades of making a true impact in education that stays right here in South Florida.”
Saturday morning, a total of 50 boats participated in the Fins Weekend Fishing Tournament, where Never Done (Dany Ayo, Marcus Bach-Armas, Jason Robinson and junior angler J.J. Rodriguez) took home first prize with an overall combined weight of 117.7 pounds (3 kingfish & 2 tuna). The quartet won a spot on the team charter on a Miami Dolphins away trip. The tournament was followed by the weigh-in presented by Hooters South Florida and Fishing Awards Ceremony and Live Auction presented by Seaboard Marine.
“The Miami Dolphins Foundation is proud to raise awareness and deliver much needed resources that directly benefit education and change lives in our community,” Miami Dolphins Senior Vice President of Communications & Community Affairs Jason Jenkins said. “Our partnership with City Year Miami invests in a younger generation to ensure they have the opportunity to recognize its potential, all the while hosting an event that creates lasting memories with our players, coaches, alumni, partners and community.”
“The partnership with the Miami Dolphins is transformational. Powered by the incredible events of Fins Weekend, the Dolphins are making an investment in the future success of many of the at-risk youth in our community,” City Year Miami Executive Director & Vice President Keith Fletcher said. “Modeled by the ‘all-in’ approach of Fins Weekend — where you see players, alumni, coaches and executives participating — the partnership with City Year is an all-in, all-year investment that goes beyond writing a check. That speaks volumes about the authenticity of the entire Dolphins organization and its commitment to our community.”
